Description: Terracotta. Bahia culture, Ecuador, approx. 500
Impressively figural depiction of a seated Kaziken, the head emphasized by its size. Large eyes, hooked nose, the mouth wide and open, the rows of teeth visible. Around his neck is a chain consisting of two rows; jewelry around the outer ears; the hair tied into two points (or jewelry) protruding from the back. His arms are held forward symmetrically and have rings around them. The lower legs are crossed with one leg lying on top of the other and both of the prominently executed hands lying on the leg on top. This cultic figure makes a very forward-facing impression. Firing opening on the head and the flat bottom. The Bahia culture existed between ca. 500 BCE and 500 CE and was one of the first ceramic cultures north of the Andes.
