A heavy Japanese mixed metal sleeve vase
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) 19th century
Baluster shaped vase standing on five scrolling feet and two mystical beast head handles, worked in high relief with a pheasant perched on the gnarled trunk by peonies and grasses, the back with a phoenix on a paulownia tree, the details of the bird's feathers intricately carved and embellished with copper, gold, silver and shakudo, patinated in red, brown, gold and shakudo, the trunk of the tree carved and chiselled to resemble the rough texture of bark.
