AN OPHICALCITE BUST OF A FEMALE DEITY, PROBABLY ISIS, LATE PERIOD, DYNASTY XXV-XXVIPublished: 1. Sylvia Schoske and Dietrich Wildung, Gott und G?tter im Alten ?gypten, 1992, Mainz am Rhein, 1992, p. 56, no. 35.2. Isabel Grimm-Stadelmann (ed.), Aesthetic Glimpses, Masterpieces of Ancient Egyptian Art, The Resandro Collection, Munich, 2012, p.145, no. R-416.Exhibited:1. ?gyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Germany.2. Staatliche Sammlung ?gyptischer Kunst München, Munich, Germany.3. Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, Gott und G?tter im Alten ?gypten, 1992-1993, Hamburg, Germany.Expert's note: The bust, preserved to the upper body, can be reconstructed as part of a seated female figure, as indicated by the bent position of the left forearm and the remains of a back support from a throne. A drilled hole on the forehead once held a uraeus, while a second hole on the flattened crown was for the insertion of a metal headdress. These fittings, combined with the seated posture, strongly suggest an identification as Isis, the quintessential mother goddess of Egypt, frequently depicted enthroned and wearing elaborate headdresses.Egypt, 700-600 BC. Elegantly carved, the figure displays voluptuous breasts and a slender waist. The face is serene, with almond-shaped eyes set beneath arched brows in raised relief, a delicate straight nose, and full lips drawn into a subtle smile above a softly rounded chin. Large, well-modeled ears frame the face, which is crowned by a tripartite wig.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, obvious losses, scattered nicks and scratches, signs of weathering and erosion, and encrustations.Provenance:- The collection of Lord Alistair McAlpine of West Green, United Kingdom.- The Resandro collection, Europe, inventory number R-416 (HP 27). A copy of a handwritten collector's note from the Resandros', noting an acquisition date of 24.1.1983, and describing the statue as "Isisfigur" (Isis figure) accompanies this clot.Lord Alistair McAlpine (1942-2012) was a British art collector, author, and political figure, best known as a close adviser and longtime treasurer to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. A member of the McAlpine construction dynasty, he developed an early passion for collecting, amassing a wide-ranging and eclectic assemblage that reflected both curiosity and connoisseurship. His interests spanned from Renaissance tapestries and antiquities to modern and contemporary art, including early acquisitions of works by Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Morris Louis. Renowned for his wit and cultured taste, McAlpine became one of the most distinctive collector personalities of his generation.Whilst enjoying their honeymoon on a Nile cruise in 1964, the newly-wed Resandros' fell in love with Egypt, and a seed was planted of a life-long passion for collecting ancient art. The collectors formed one of the most important and largest private collections of primarily Egyptian antiquities in Europe, acquiring unique works at the major auctions and from respected dealers. The extensive collection, which primarily focused on bronzes but expanded to include exquisite amulets, elegant vessels and striking sculptures, was largely formed from this formative trip to Egypt in 1964 up until the end of the 1990s. Through their collecting, the couple formed a close relationship with the Staatliches Museum ?gyptischer Kunst in Munich, Germany, and especially with Dietrich Wildung, Director of the Museum from 1975-1988, and Sylvia Schoske. This collaboration resulted in five major exhibitions and scholarly catalogues of the collection.Weight: 133.8 g Dimensions: Height 6.5 cm (excl. stand), 8.8 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on an associated stand. (2)Literature comparison:Compare a closely related limestone bust of Isis, dated 945-715 BC, 8.4 cm high, in the Cincinnati Art Museum, accession number 1947.383.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Sotheby's London, 7 December 2021, lot 35 Price: GBP 20,160 or approx. EUR 28,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : An Egyptian Greywacke or Green Schist Head of the Goddess Isis or Hathor, 26th Dynasty (664-525 BC), 11.4 cm high Expert remark: Compare the nearly identical scale of the actual head; the piece confirms the Late Period tradition of depicting Isis (or Hathor) enthroned with elaborate headdress attachments.
