拍品描述 翻译
OHASHI KAREI: A PAIR OF LARGE YUZEN-BIRODO (CUT VELVET) HANGINGS WITH LIONSBy Ohashi Karei, signed Karei and sealed OhashiJapan, Meiji period (1868-1912)Each set within a brocade silk and wood frame to depict a family of lions within a lush, exotic landscape. The first panel shows a powerful male lion and a reclining lioness attentively watching over their playful cubs, all set against a backdrop of palm trees, blossoming foliage, and large hydrangea-like blooms. The second panel similarly depicts a male and female lion with their young, resting beneath tall palms and leafy vegetation.Inscriptions: Each signed Karei 華嶺 with seal Ohashi 大橋SIZE 170 x 222.5 cm (each)Condition: Good condition with expected wear. Some soiling, few stains, obvious loose threads, some tears and losses, particularly to the brocade edges and not affecting the image.Ohashi Karei was very likely related to Ohashi Suiseki (1865–1945), who was born in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, and studied under Amano Hoko in Kyoto and Watanabe Shoka in Tokyo. Suiseki was best known for his paintings of tigers and lions, which became his most popular subjects. In 1868 the leading textile firm Nishimura Sozaemon-Kyoto invented the technique of yuzen-birodo. The thick fluffy characteristic of velvet is produced by weaving in a metal rod so as to form loops (wana) and cutting the top of the loops to create a pile, which is then brushed. The rod is woven into the structure by hand. The pile loops are cut by hand and then the metal wires are removed. The process requires a lot of labor-intensive work. The precise cutting would achieve a chiaroscuro three-dimensional effect. Although these textiles look like paintings at first, they have a distinctive feel that is quite unique. The first example of Yuzen-Birodo was exhibited at the Second National Industrial Exhibition in Tokyo in 1881.Auction comparison:Compare a related velvet hanging of tigers, dated to the late 19th century, at Christie's, Asian and Fine European Costume, Textiles and Fans, 19 November 2002, London, lot 143 (sold for GBP 1,527 or approx. EUR 4,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Compare a related six-panel screen, by Ohashi Suiseki, at Christie's, Japanese and Korean Works of Art, 22 September 2004, New York, lot 184 (sold for 9,560 USD or approx. EUR 14,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
