A RARE CHINESE EXPORT 'FAMILLE-VERTE' ARMORIAL PLATE, KANGXI PERIOD, CIRCA 1715 painted with the crest of Edward Harrison, Governor of Fort St George, Madras, 1711-1717, the border painted with dragons, goldfish, cranes and a pagoda, within rouge-de-fer and gilt borders, two floral sprigs to the reverse Diameter 22.5cm Davidson Collection: no: 34 Provenance: Weld Collection Heirloom & Howard, XSCW25. A copy of the invoice is available The crest is of Harrison, An arm vested azure cuffed argent holding in the hand a broken dart proper, pheoned of the second. This was the crest of Atcliff in Lancashire and Elkrington in Northamptonshire, recorded for Harrison of Lincoln’s Inn Fields. [1] The service was made for Edward Harrison, born 3 December 1674. His grandfather, Sir John Harrison under Charles I was a court official and financier, of a Lancashire family settled in Hertfordshire. His father Richard Harrison, M.P. for Lancaster 1669-79 married Audrey, daughter of George Villiers, 4th Viscount Grandison of Limerick. Edward was the eldest surviving son. He had two surviving brothers; George and Thomas. [2] He married Frances Bray a daughter of Reginald Bray of Great Barrington, Gloucestershire. They had a son Richard and a daughter, Etheldreda (commonly known as Audrey) who married Charles Townshend, Lord Lynn while his father was alive and became the 3rd Viscount Townshend.[3] There are six services with Townshend impaling Harrison.[4] Their son Richard did not survive the death of his father but was with him in Madras. Edward died on 28 November 1732 and is buried at All Saints, Hertford.?? ?Edward was in the maritime service of the East India Company and started as a Purser in the London (4) in voyage season 1693/4 bound for Madras & Bengal. He was Captain of Powderham Castle in voyage season 1699/1700 for Borneo. ? He was then Captain of Kent (2) in voyage season 1703/4 for China, departing on 12 February 1704 and returning on 18 November 1705. Captain again of the Kent (2) in voyage season 1706/7 bound for China & Madras, departing on 24 December 1706. This was a very long voyage not returning until 17 August 1710. On this voyage they visited Canton twice, a year apart, in between visiting Madras and Malacca.[5] His two voyages to China were financially very rewarding for Captain Harrison’s private trade. In 1704 he brought back Asiatic merchandise to a value of £7,448 and in 1707 his private trading merchandise reached a grand total of £20,115. This would have netted him a substantial profit and made him very wealthy. [6] He was appointed Governor of Madras in 1711 and arrived aboard the Dartmouth on 11 July 1711 and took office the following day. His duelling exploit in 1695 at Madras, whilst he was a purser, was already known. During his period in office he largely rebuilt the settlement, put down a minor revolt and was presented with a sword of honour by the Company. He returned on 8 January 1717 a wealthy man.[7] Whilst Governor of Madras Edward Harrison participated in extensive private trade by taking shares in trading voyages from India to Canton using John Scattergood as his supercargo. For example the Amity was a joint venture between leading merchants in Bombay and Madras.[8] Another method was providing finance for merchants in London who wished to invest in goods from India. He also traded in diamonds for export to London as had his predecessor Thomas Pitt. Edward’s son Richard was in Madras with his father and was sent in the country ship Amity in which Harrison senior had a share, with the Supercargo John Scattergood on a voyage to Canton in May 1713 and Richard had 1000 dollars to be invested under Scattergood’s guidance.[9] He was provided with £1,500 of his father’s money to be invested in gold, tea and silk. It appears Richard must have died before his father Edward Harrison died in 1732. Edward entered Parliament as M.P. on 2 March 1717, appointed to a vacant seat for Weymouth and continued on election later in that role until 1722 when he was elected for the constituency of Hertford.? In early January 1726 his father died and he inherited Balls Park in Hertfordshire.[10] He remained an MP until 10 August 1726 when his brother George took over the seat, presumably as Edward had to manage the estate following their father’s death earlier in the year and his appointment as Postmaster-General, 1726-32.[11]?? On his return from Madras he took great interest in East India Company affairs and was a Director of the Company from 1718-31 becoming Deputy Chairman in 1723, 1728 and 1731, Chairman in 1724 and 1729.[12] ?
