A CHINESE EXPORT ARMORIAL 'FAMILLE-ROSE' PORCELAIN TANKARD, QIANLONG PERIOD, CIRCA 1749 painted with the arms of Stephens or Steevens, flanked by two floral sprigs, beneath a rouge-de-fer and gilt band Height 14cm Davidson Collection no: 49 Provenance: Guest & Gray, invoice no. 856 The arms are those of a cadet branch of Stephens or Steevens or Stevens of Colchester and Arden in Essex (granted in 1592). Per chevron azure and ermine, in chief two eagles displayed or a mullet for difference; crest, A demi eagle displayed proper. This family descends from John Stephens of Colchester, living at the beginning of the seventeenth century, and the service may have been made for Captain William Stevens of the East Indiaman Delaware at Canton at the end of 1749.[1] A large tankard 5 ? ins high. Captain William Stevens appears first in the East India Company [EIC] maritime service as 1st Mate of Swift in the voyage season 1741/2. However he must have had prior service at sea either in the East India Company or more likely in either the Baltic or West Indies trade.[2] The Swift was a Company packet of 129 tons, 30 crew and 8 guns would carry dispatches from London to the overseas Factories. In the voyage season 1741/2 her first voyage the Swift was under the command of Captain Henry Watts who had been in the EIC maritime service since 1717 starting as a 4th Mate. The voyage started from Portsmouth on 12 November 1741 and their first port of call was at Cape Town on 31 January 1742. The ship then called at St Augustine’s Bay on the south western coast of Madagascar. On the? Return voyage to England the ship called at St Helena on the 25 April before arriving back at Portsmouth on 17 September 1742.[3] William Stevens remained as 1st Mate for his next voyage in 1742/3 again in the Swift, Captain Henry Watts. The ship left Portsmouth on 11 January 1743 and arrived at Cape Town on 21 March. On their return voyage they arrived off St Helena on 7 May 1743 and docked at Portsmouth on 2 August 1743. It is not known what William Stevens did after this voyage until his next appointment. Stevens must have been related to the Principal Managing Owner (PMO) George Stevens of the newly launched Delaware 499 tons with 26 guns and a crew of 90 when he was appointed commander on its first voyage 1748/9 assigned to Fort St David and China. The Charter Party co-signatory with George Stevens was Elias Bird. The Delaware left The Downs on 28 September 1747 and called at Madeira on 13 December, which was a comparatively long passage probably due to the autumnal gales. The ship then stopped at Sao Tiago in the Cape Verde islands on 12 January 1748. They reached Cape Town on the 27 March and Mauritius on the 23 June and Fort St David just south of Madras on 27 July. The ship must have remained there some time as the next port of call was Tellichery on the west coast of India on 19 November. The shi moved south to Colombo arriving on 14 December. Clearly they were under orders to transport supplies or trade goods to the different Factories. The next destination was Tamborneo 25 March 1749 and then onto Batavia on 25 May. From Batavia the ship moved to Whampoa in the Pearl River, the anchorage for Canton on 11 July.1749. The Delaware waited here for her return cargo of tea and chinaware.? Captain Stevens would have had plenty of opportunity to purchase a porcelain service in the shops adjacent to the English Hong, where as a captain he would stay while his ship remained at Whampoa. The ship started her departure from China on 11 November 1749 and anchored off Cape Town on 21 February 1750. A brief stop at St Helena on the 17 March and arrived off Blackwall on 30 May 1750. A voyage of just under three years.?? ? [1] Howard D. S.
