A CHINESE EXPORT 'FAMILLE-VERTE' PORCELAIN ARMORIAL PLATE, KANGXI PERIOD, CIRCA 1720 painted with the arms of Peter Godfrey predominantly in rouge-de-fer, with a crest and chrysanthemum flowers to the border, two floral sprigs to the reverse Diameter 28.4cm Davidson Collection no: 43 Provenance:? John Foster Collection Weld Collection Heirloom & Howard, XSCW202 Literature: Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. I, illustrated p. 190. One of five services for the Godfrey family. The mantling for this service is blueish grey very like that on the 1716 Fenwick service (supercargo Edward Fenwick) and that of the 1718 Ainsworth service (supercargo Rowland Ainsworth) see illustration below of the three services. The arms are of Godfrey; Sable a chevron between three pelicans’ heads erased or vulning themselves proper; crest, A demi negro holding in the dexter hand a cross crosslet fitched argent; motto ‘Corde fixam’[1] Made for Peter Godfrey, who was a supercargo for voyage season 1715/6 on the Marlborough bound for Madras and China. The other supercargoes on this ship were Edward Fenwick, Rowland Ainsworth, John Horsemonden who all ordered armorial services as did the Captain Mathew Martin. This voyage is famous for the fact that all four supercargoes ordered services as did the Captain. The Godfrey family originally from Kent, with later Essex connections from their grandfather, Michael Godfrey (1625-1689), a very successful mercer who purchased a house called The Rookery, in George Lane, Woodford, as his out-of-town house. His eldest son, Michael, was also a member of the Mercers’ Company and was one of the founders of the Bank of England, but he died quite young. The Rookery passed to Peter Godfrey (1662-1724), Michael’s only surviving brother. He was also a prosperous City merchant, a Director of the Bank of England and Director of the East India Company (1698-99 and 1710-18), and he served two terms as a Member of Parliament for the City. He married twice and had eight children, but although five of them reached middle age, all died unmarried, although not necessarily childless.[2] Peter Godfrey’s third son Peter Godfrey (1695-1769) was a supercargo from 1712 (aged seventeen) and became Chief of the Council at Canton in 1728. He was admitted to the Mercers’ Company in 1723 and became a Director of the East India Company (EIC), serving for about sixteen years in several sessions between 1734 and 1760. He was buried at Woodford on 21 July 1769. After his death a tall Corinthian column of Siena marble was erected over the family vault. It was designed by Sir Robert Taylor and is a relica of those he designed for the Bank of England, none of which survived. It is listed as Grade II*.[3] Peter junior had three brothers; Joseph, a member of the Sun Fire Office management committee with Peter, Thomas (1693-1772) and Edmund (1696-1765), both the latter were also involved with the EIC. Edmund, Peter’s younger brother also sailed to China as a supercargo in 1716/7, 1719/20, 1726/7. Thomas and Edmund both signed charter party for voyages during the 1750s, sometimes working together. On 9th April 1746 Thomas and Joseph Godfrey were two of seven scrutineers who presided over the election of the Directors of the EIC, with Thomas as the Chairman. In the 1770s the illegitimate sons of Peter and Thomas; William and David Godfrey, signed the charter party for the ship Godfrey (2).[4]?? Peter Godfrey is known to have been a supercargo in the voyage seasons 1712/3 on the Loyal Bliss to China;[5] 1715/6 on the Marlborough to China and Madras;[6] 1718/9 on the Sunderland to China;[7] and for voyage season 1727/28 at Canton, chief of the Council of eleven Supercargoes for the Caesar (3), Harrison, Macclesfield (2) and Sunderland.[8] Peter Godfrey travelled to Canton for this voyage season on the Caesar (3) arriving off Macao on 15 June 1728 ahead of the other three ships. Godfrey had considerable trouble on arrival as the senior Chinese official from whom they needed permission to trade was regarded by the Co-Hong merchants as so bad (putting merchants in chains and milking them for cash) they had all left Canton. Matters improved when this senior official fortunately died. The main items Godfrey was mandated to buy was chinaware and tea.[9]All the ships finally obtained their goods and the last one sailed at the beginning of January 1729. [1] D. S.
