拍品描述 翻译
A CHINESE EXPORT ARMORIAL 'FAMILLE-ROSE' TANKARD, QIANLONG PERIOD, CIRCA 1765 painted with the arms of Lascelles within a gilt rococo cartouche, within underglaze-blue cartouches, scattered with flowers and butterflies, highlighted in gilding Height 12cm Davidson Collection no: 25 Provenance: Heirloom & Howard, 43403. A copy of the invoice available This tankard with the arms of Lascelles, a family associated with the East India Company but also very successful in the West India trade, having had sugar plantations in Barbados since the mid-17th century. The underglaze blue cell diaper and scroll band places this piece in Style R7. It is not in CAP I or II and will be illustrated in CAP III. Height 4? inches. It was certainly ordered by, and almost certainly for, Peter Lascelles, captain of the York [3] who was in Canton during the 1765 season. He was of the Lascelles family of Northallerton, Yorkshire and owned the properties of Mask Hall, Northallerton and Knights House, South Mimms, Hertfordshire. Peter Lascelles was possibly the son of William Lascelles, gent of Durham and brother of Rev. Robert Lascelles. [1]Peter married Jane Haversham, his eldest daughter Jane married Nathaniel William Wraxall who had been a Judge Advocate in the East India Company in Gujarat in 1771, he was later an MP from 1780-94.[2]? Peter Lascelles died early in the year 1776 as his will was proved 11 May.? His maritime service with the East India Company started as a surgeon in 1744.[3] Almost certainly he would have had another voyage in some capacity before his appointment as 4th Officer. For the voyage season 1749/50 he was made 4th Officer on the York [1] under Captain Edward Ward.[4] Their destination was Madras and China, leaving in January 1750 and returning in August 1751.[5] A relative of Peter’s, Captain Henry Lascelles had previously been in command of this ship on its earlier three voyages and perhaps was instrumental in his appointment. He was next 2nd Officer on the Chesterfield for the season 1751/2. The fact that the second Charter Party signatory was a Daniel Lascelles, almost certainly a relative, no doubt influenced his promotion to 2nd Officer. The Principal Managing Owner (PMO) was Captain John Hallett & second signatory Daniel Lascelles, no doubt related. The ship was under the command of Captain Edwin Carter and was assigned to Madras and Bengal. They departed in January 1752 and returned in November 1753.[6] He was promoted to 1st Officer on York [2] (PMO was Captain John Hallett & Abraham Wells) for the season 1753/4 under Captain Edward Ward bound for Madras and Bengal. Departing in March 1754 and returning in August 1755.? For voyage season 1756/7 he was appointed Captain of York [2] with the destination of Bombay. The ship left Portsmouth in June 1757 and on the homeward voyage from India, after leaving St Helena, was lost in the River Shannon, Ireland when he was being chased by French corsairs on 29 October 1758.[7] Clearly he was exonerated by the Shipping Committee because he again commanded a new much larger York [3] built under the control of the PMO Captain John Hallett, for its first voyage season 1759/60 bound for Bombay and Bengal. They departed Portsmouth in May 1760 and returned November 1762. It was a long voyage as the ship first landed at Anjengo, then Cochin and Tellicherry before reaching Bombay. The Presidency at Bombay then dispatched the ship to Surat and Mokha, Yemen probably as it was too late in the season to sail round to Bengal. On returning to Bombay they were dispatched to Surat and then Calcutta. After returning to Bombay they started their homeward voyage. Captain Peter Lascelles’s last voyage was to Bombay and China for the season 1763/4 in York [3]. PMO Capt John Hallett & William Wells. Departing The Downs in April 1764 and reaching Bombay in September. The ship was then sent to call at various ports on the Malabar Coast before returning to Bombay in March 1765. The York was then dispatched via three ports on the Malabar Coast to Malacca reaching there in June. Finally they arrived at Whampoa in July 1765.[8] This is when Peter Lascelles is likely to have ordered his armorial service or perhaps a set of tankards. The ship left Whampoa at the end of January 1766 arriving off The Downs in July 1766. Peter Lascelles was elected a Director of the East India Company for the year 1770. He was re-elected in each of the years 1772-75.[9] [1] National Archives:? P.C.C. PROB 11/1020, f.235 1776 [2] www.historyofparliamentonline.org?
