拍品描述 翻译
A CHINESE ARMORIAL SOUP PLATE, QIANLONG PERIOD, CIRCA 1760 painted with the arms of Richardson of Pentcaitland, Scotland, within floral and rouge-de-fer and gilt spearhead borders Diameter 23cm Davidson Collection no: 28 Provenance: Heirloom and Howard, 42747 The arms are of Richardson, Or on a fess azure between in chief a bull’s head couped sable and in base a galley, her oars erected in saltire, flags displayed gules, a saltire couped argent; with crest, A dexter arm in armour fesswise grasping a dagger in pale all proper. The motto is Virtute aquiritur honos.? These are the arms of Richardson of Pentcaitland, Co. Haddington, created baronets of Nova Scotia in 1630. The 1stBaronet was Sir Robert Richardson of Pentcaitland a second son of Sir James Richardson of Smeaton. The 5th Baronet, descended from a cousin of the 2nd Baronet, died in 1731 without issue and was succeeded first by his brother, Sir William 6th Baronet and then his son Sir Robert Richardson the 7th Baronet, who died in 1752, the title then passing to a distant kinsman descended from the elder brother of the 1st Baronet. This was Sir James Richardson, 8th Baronet, son of George Richardson of Edinburgh, Writer to the Signet [Society of Solicitors]. Sir James was then succeeded in 1788 by his younger brother George the 9th Baronet, a Captain in the maritime service of the East India Company[1], who commanded the Pigot [1] at Canton in 1769 and who had earlier ordered this service.[2] George Richardson had married Mary, daughter of David Cooper RN, and succeeded his brother as 9th Baronet on 24 November 1788. He had three sons born in 1783 George, 1784 James, 1785 John and six daughters of whom only two survived. It appears that his three sons were legitimised by his later marriage to Mary Cooper. He succeeded his brother as baronet on 24 November 1788 dying four years later on 11 December 1792. He was succeeded by his three sons as 10th to 12th Baronets each without issue. On the death of his youngest son Sir John on 12 April 1821 the title remained dormant for sixteen years until a very distant kinsman, Sir John Stewart-Richardson of Pitfour Castle, Co. Perth was made heir in 1837. The present 17th Baronet, Simon Alaisdair Stewart-Richardson lives at Lynedale, Longcross, Surrey.[3] Captain George Richardson was a founder member of The Society of East India Commanders and listed as a Trustee of the Society with address at Adelphi, London in 1773.[4] George Richardson’s maritime service must have started in a more junior capacity but unrecorded before his maritime service with the East India Company as 2nd Officer on the Prince Edward in the voyage season 1756/7 to Bombay under Captain Robert Haldane. Principal Managing Owner (PMO) Elias Bird & Charles Pole. The departed The Downs on 4 May 1757 with their first landfall at Aceh ( Sumatra) clearly they had overshot Bombay and were on the wrong latitude, perhaps due to faulty dead reckoning and sideways currents! They sailed back to Bombay via Colombo arriving at Bombay on 23 January 1758. They departed for England via St Helena and due to adverse winds landed at the River Shannon on 3 November 1758 finally arriving 3 March 1759 at The Downs before proceeding up the Thames.? On his second voyage George was 1st Officer on the Prince Edward for voyage season 1759/60 bound for Madras and Bengal under Captain Haldane. PMO Robert Haldane & Archibald Lundin. They departed 23 April 1760 and arrived at Madras on 9 September, before arriving at Calcutta on 16 December. They returned to Madras and Pondicherry in 1761 before finally departing Madras arriving at St Helena in January 1762 and The Downs on 29 April 1762. It is likely that, as his elder brother James had succeeded to the baronetcy in 1752 and had no son, that George may have taken the opportunity to order at Madras an armorial service using the country ships trading to Canton.? George was appointed Captain of the Pigot whose PMO was John Durand with Capt John Hallett, it was a newly launched ship. The voyage season was 1762/3 assigned to Madras and Bengal. They departed 8 April 1763 arriving at Johanna, in the Comoros Islands 27 July, Madras 29 August and various coastal ports before Calcutta 16 February 1764. They returned via Mauritius in June, St Helena and arrived at The Downs 16 October 1764. However on his return to London following an enquiry he was dismissed from the maritime service by the EIC for accepting goods above his privilege allowance from the Grenade off Tenerife of 30 bales of cloth; 23 pipes of wine.[5] This was more of a temporary suspension as he was able to command the Pigot on its next chartered voyage in 1765/6 to Madras and Bengal. PMO John Durrand & William Wells. Departing on 21 February 1766 and returning on 26 October 1767.?? His third voyage as Captain of the Pigot in the season 1768/9 was for Madras and China. The PMO was unchanged but the second signatory was William Nixon. The ship departed 2 January 1769 calling at Tenerife, Madras, Malacca reaching Whampoa on 28 August. They started their return from Whampoa in late December arriving at St Helena on 30 March 1770 and The Downs on 6 June 1770. His fourth voyage as Captain of the Pigot was for the season 1770/1 for St Helena and Benkulen. They departed 5 June 1771, calling at St Helena and then Batavia in January 1772 reaching Benkulen 22 April. After visiting other stations on Sumatra they returned to England calling at the Cape on 8 March 1773, St Helena and Ascension arriving at The Downs on 26 July 1773. The Pigot was removed from service and Captain George Richardson was appointed by John Durand to his newly launched ship in 1778 the Ganges. This was the voyage season 1778/9 assigned to Madras and Bengal. Departing on 7 May 1779 and calling at Madeira and Goree Island off Senegal, they arrived at Madras in September. Calcutta was reached on 11 November. They returned to Madras in February 1780 before returning via Madagascar, the Cape, St Helena and Crookhaven in Ireland (perhaps due to adverse winds in January) before arriving at The Downs on 8 February 1781. This was his last voyage. ?Sources Farrington A.; Biographical Index of East India Company Maritime Service Officers 1600 – 1834? ?& Catalogue of East India Company Ship’s Journals and Logs 1600 – 1834 , London 1999.?
