Description

? A RARE RED SANDSTONE STELE OF A SEATED JINA, GUPTA PERIOD, 4TH-5TH CENTURY

Northeastern India, probably Uttar Pradesh. Sensitively carved, seated in dhyanasana upon a lotus throne, with his right hand resting upon his knee in bhumisparsa mudra, while the left lies gently in his lap in dhyana mudra. He is clad in a diaphanous sanghati gracefully draped over the left shoulder, leaving the right arm and part of his chest exposed. The rounded face, serene in expression, distinguished by boldly carved, almond-shaped eyes set beneath prominently raised and gently arched brows, centered by a large urna, a broad nose, and full lips forming a subtle smile, all flanked by long, pendulous earlobes. The hair rendered in thick rows of curls surmounted by a domed ushnisha.

Provenance: The collection of Nik Douglas, acquired in the 1970s and thence by descent to his wife Christi Douglas, New York, United States. Nicholas ‘Nik’ Douglas (1944-2012) was a renowned author, curator, and Asian art expert. Between 1966 and 1974, he traveled through South and Southeast Asia visiting remote areas of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Sikkim, Thailand, and Indonesia, building up his knowledge of the customs, beliefs, and spiritual practices of Hindus and Buddhists. He researched Oriental medicine, alchemy, art, sculpture, and mysticism, studying with Hindu yogis, Buddhist lamas, and doctors. The Buckingham Collection was built by Nik Douglas, his mother, and his grandfather, as well as further collectors in the family. Part of the collection was exhibited in 2010 by The Tibet House, New York, The Buddha Image: Out of Uddiyana
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear, natural age-related imperfections, and expected traces of weathering. Obvious losses, cracks, and extensive signs of erosion to exposed areas, with scattered chips and few small nicks.

Weight: 14.8 kg
Dimensions: Height 36.8 (excl. stand), 43.8 cm (incl. stand)

With an associated stand. (2)

The image of the present Jina embodies radiant inner calm and stillness, both expressions of supreme wisdom, reflects the refined artistic idiom of the late Gupta period. As the culmination of a long process of stylistic development during a time of Buddhist expansion, this representation contributed to the evolving model for representations of the Buddha across Asia. In an effort to express enlightenment and the meditative nature of the figure, the form was subtly abstracted and idealized, particularly in the treatment of the eyes, the distinctively raised and arched brows, and the balanced interplay of the convex planes of the cheeks and forehead.
