Description

A BRONZE STEM CUP WITH A MALE HEAD, PROBABLY ROMAN CULTURE, CIRCA 2ND-3RD CENTURY

Well cast, supported on a spreading foot, the shaft of the vessel shaped as the head of a male deity distinguished with a luxuriant beard and abundant wavy hair, his face marked by gold-inlaid eyes, a prominent nose, and full lips. The head surmounted, in the manner of a headdress, by the calyx of the cup, with its ridged, tapering sides rising to an everted rim.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum, acquired in Pakistan during the 1970s. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Fair condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear and casting irregularities. Expected traces of use. Areas of deep corrosion. A visible fracture to the mid-section of the vessel and a small loss to the rim. Light warping. Scattered minor nicks and few small dents. The bronze surface with a rich, naturally grown patina, with extensive areas of malachite encrustation with remnants of soil to the interior.

Weight: 393.5 g
Dimensions: Height 14.3 cm

The present vessel draws inspiration from the mythical figure Serapis, a Graeco-Egyptian syncretic deity created in Egypt during the 3rd century BC as a means to unify the Greek and Egyptian subjects of the Ptolemaic Kingdom. The figure of Serapis combines elements from the Egyptian gods Apis and Osiris with chthonic Greek deities such as Hades and Dionysus, as well as healing ones like Asclepius. The cult of Serapis continued to flourish during the Roman Empire, often replacing Osiris as the consort of Isis in temples outside Egypt.

The head of the god is crowned with a kalathos or modius, the invariable characteristic feature of Serapis. This element, originally a flat basket with an outward-curving rim, symbolizes agricultural abundance and the fertility of the earth, later becoming a common attribute of fertility deities.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related silver-inlaid bronze bust of Zeus Serapis, Roman culture, Imperial period, 2nd-3rd century AD, 17.1 cm high, in the Saint Louis Art Museum, object number 69:1923. Compare a related bronze figure of Jupiter Heliopolitanus, Roman culture, Imperial period, 2nd century AD, 38.4 cm high, in the Musée du Louvre, inventory number AO 19534.
