Description

‘FLYCATCHER AND MAGNOLIA’, BY XIE GUANQIAO

China. Ink and watercolors on paper. Finely painted with free brushstrokes to depict a long-tailed green-crested bird with red, white, and black plumage, perched on a blossoming magnolia stem.

Expert’s Note: The bird in this image is most likely an Asian paradise flycatcher (Terpsiphone paradisi, 寿带鸟), shown here in its rufous morph with long tail streamers and a turquoise crest. Native to southern and central China, this species is famed for the male’s spectacular plumage, which made it a favored subject in Ming and Qing bird-and-flower painting. Its Chinese name, shoudainiao (literally “longevity-belt bird”), lent the bird strong auspicious associations, especially with long life.

Inscriptions: Lower right, signed ‘Guanqiao’ and inscribed ‘in the style of Tianchisheng’, with one seal of the artist.

Provenance: Collection of Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf, London, United Kingdom. Thence by descent. Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1909-1995) was born into an aristocratic family in Austria. He studied anthropology and archaeology in Vienna and then moved to London to further his studies under the renowned anthropologist, Bronislaw Malinowski, before travelling to India in 1936. There, he focused his research on the Naga people in the far North-Eastern region, learning their language and studying their culture. After the war, he worked as advisor for tribal affairs to the Nizam's government before visiting Nepal in 1953, where he was the first foreigner to study the people of the newly opened Himalayan kingdom. Later, he returned to London to set up a new Department of Anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies. Much of his time at SOAS was focused on Nepal, and he remained in post at the School, gaining numerous honors and awards, until his retirement in 1976. He continued to make extended trips to India and Nepal and published several books at the age of 80.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear, light scratches, few small nicks, and minor creasing.

Dimensions: Image size 75.5 x 45.4 cm, Size incl. frame 90 X 59.7 cm

With a silk brocade mounting and wood frame.

Xie Guanqiao (1811-1864), born in Fujian, was a significant artist who migrated to Taiwan during the Qing dynasty. He played a crucial role in the cultural scene of Taiwan during that era. Alongside Lu Shiyi and Ye Huacheng, he was once commissioned by the Lin Benyuan family in Taipei and Banqiao, earning them the collective title of the ‘Three Masters of the Lin Family’. He excelled in both calligraphy and painting, and was particularly outstanding in the cursive script, characterized by round and graceful strokes. Guanqiao demonstrated skill in landscape, floral, and bird-and-flower paintings, and his depiction of bamboo was especially noteworthy.

In Chinese bird-and-flower painting, the long-tailed bird is often an idealized creation rather than a strict species, blending features of the paradise flycatcher (for its flowing tail, see also expert’s note above), the golden pheasant (for its brilliant plumage), and occasionally the magpie or phoenix (for their auspicious associations). Its crest, elongated feathers, and vivid colors signal refinement, rank, and blessings of longevity. Paired with the magnolia, a flower of purity, dignity, and feminine grace, the bird creates a harmonious composition that joins noble character with elegance and auspicious fortune.
