Description

A LARGE BRONZE VAJRA, JAVA, INDONESIA, CIRCA 8TH-10TH CENTURY

Boldly cast, the sharp, claw-shaped four-pronged vajra has a bulbous central section flanked by two further globular knobs, issuing the prongs from makara heads, with the central sphere terminating in a rounded finial.

Weight: 821 g
Dimensions: Length 27 cm

Provenance: English trade. Acquired from a local estate sale.
Condition: Fair condition, commensurate with age. Expected ancient wear, encrustations, casting irregularities, some warping due to heat damage possibly originating from a temple fire, obvious losses to one end of the central sphere, small nicks and chips. A dark, naturally grown patina.

Symbolizing the energy associated with enlightenment, the vajra is often described as a bolt of lightning with the indestructible, luminescent quality of a diamond. Vajras like these examples are used in Esoteric Buddhist rituals in conjunction with mantras and hand gestures. On each end, the four prongs, representing the cardinal directions, surround a central spike marking the cosmic axis.
