Indonesia. Finely modeled, standing in a dynamic pose reminiscent of tribhanga and similar to contrapposto, with the right hand gracefully raised in abhaya mudra and the left hand held in chin mudra. The figure clad in a diaphanous sanghati draped over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and chest exposed. His round face bearing a serene expression, with heavy-lidded eyes beneath gently arched brows, a broad nose, and full lips, flanked by long, pendulous earlobes. The hair arranged in large snail-shell curls surmounting the domed ushnisha.
Provenance: La Balaustra Antichità, Arte Archeologia classica orientale e precolombiana, 1998, Bologna, Italy. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022), acquired from the above. A copy of a stamped certificate written by Giuliana Zanetti of Antichità La Balaustra, adressed to Paolo Bertuzzi, dated 18 July 1998, dating the present lot to the 9th-10th century, accompanies this lot. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than sixty years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.

Within the framework of the transmission of devotional practices, iconographic conventions, and casting techniques by itinerant monks and craftsmen, the visual cultures of the Buddhist territories of continental and insular Southeast Asia reveal a shared artistic language across the region, particularly pronounced between the 8th and 10th centuries. In this context, the production of bronze Buddhist sculptures in central Thailand during the Dvaravati period, characterized by frontal symmetry, serene expressions, and simplified forms, absorbed influences from northern Indian Gupta and Pala models and served as prototypes disseminated throughout the region, as evidenced by the examples to which the present lot is compared.
In Java, these models were adapted and elaborated under Sailendra patronage according to local aesthetic preferences, typically resulting in elongated proportions, intricate ornamentation, and complex drapery. In the case of the present Buddha image, however, the flowing contours of his body, subtly delineated beneath the diaphanous garment, remain reminiscent of the Gupta style of northern India, while the sloping shoulders and oval face with full cheeks recall the Buddha images produced in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, during the 7th and 8th centuries.
