Description

? A MUGHAL INLAID AGATE CRUTCH DAGGER AND SHEATH, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

North India. The gupti agate handle, bow-shaped and elegantly carved with floral scrolls and leaves, is decorated with ruby inlays set in gold circles. The steel blade is decorated with a koftgari gilt damascened foliate scroll design, while the orange velvet-covered scabbard is adorned with damascened fittings on each side. (2)

Weight: 367 g
Dimensions: Length 57 cm

Provenance: A private collection in Rajasthan, India.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Rubbing to the gilt, soiling and a tear to the velvet, as well as tiny cracks to the stone.

Gupti is literally translated as 'concealed weapon'. This dagger was possibly once concealed within a short stick and thus served both as an arm-rest and a concealed weapon. The use of agate hilts by Mughal craftsmen is recorded, but the material is much less common than jade.

Museum comparison:
Compare a related Mughal jade crutch dagger and sheath, dated 18th-19th century, 57.5 cm (long), in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 36.25.1001a, b.
