Description

? AN IMPORTANT SANDSTONE HEAD OF SHIVA, KHMER EMPIRE, ANGKOR PERIOD, ANGKOR WAT STYLE, 13TH CENTURY

Cambodia. Magnificently carved, the face conveying a serene expression, with almond-shaped eyes beneath ridged eyebrows, the forehead centered with a distinctive third eye, above a broad nose and pursed lips forming a tranquil smile, framed by a delicate mustache, all flanked by long, pendulous earlobes. The head crowned with a conical tiara with a neatly incised central floral band, tied at the nape, while the hair arranged in a high, cylindrical chignon.

Provenance: Collection of Husain Fareed Haddawy, Thailand, 2016. A private collection in New York, United States, acquired from the above. Husain Fareed Haddawy (1930-2025), born in Baghdad and educated in the United States, was a distinguished translator and scholar, best known for his English translation of The Arabian Nights, published by W. W. Norton and based on the 1984 critical Arabic edition by Muhsin Mahdi, celebrated for philological rigor and literary elegance. In addition to his academic work as a professor of comparative literature, Haddawy worked as an art critic and became a passionate collector over time, maintaining close connections with the Iraqi art world and the modernist milieu of Jawad Selim, thus bridging literature, art, and cultural heritage. He spent his final years in retirement in Thailand.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age, with surface wear, natural age-related imperfections, and light traces of weathering and erosion. Few minute nicks. Minute losses and small chips to exposed areas, mostly along the edges of the crown.

Weight: 30.7 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 42.5 cm (excl. stand), 64.3 cm (incl. stand)

Mounted on an associated wood stand. (2)

Khmer patrons and artists produced works of art that could depict either a deified king or a god who has royal attributes. The Khmer cult of the god-king allowed for such fluidity of interpretation. Presence of a third eye in the forehead and matted locks of hair are attributes both of the Hindu god Shiva and the followers who emulated him in order to get closer to him.

This image dates from the Angkor period and is associated with the Angkor style, which developed primarily during the 12th century, when the Khmer Empire reached its territorial zenith. This era began with the reign of Suryavarman II (1113–1145), who commissioned the construction of Angkor Wat, the largest temple of the period, dedicated to Vishnu. Stylistically, Angkor-period sculpture is characterized by a return to the somewhat angular and upright modeling seen in periods preceding the 11th-century Baphuon style. The scale of Angkor-period sculpture, however, generally aligns with the more modest dimensions of Baphuon-period works, in contrast to the monumental sculptures of the 10th century and earlier.
