Description

A Large Chinese Black Lacquer and Inlaid Hardstone Cabinet (Liangge Gui) China,Late Qing Dynasty, 19th Century
Height: 193 cm ( 75.98 inches) | Width: 40 cm ( 15.75 inches) | Length: 105 cm ( 41.34 inches)
Wood structure covered in dark lacquer, decorated with pictorial inlays of hardstones (soapstone, agate, mother of pearls), stained bone, and carved wood.
This substantial cabinet is a striking example of Chinese decorative furniture from the 19th century, designed to display opulence and a reverence for the natural world. It is a two-part cabinet (Liangge Gui), composed of superimposed sections with four vertical doors. The wood structure is entirely covered in a deep, dark, polished lacquer, providing an ideal, somber backdrop for the vibrant inlaid decoration. The cabinet doors are richly decorated using the hardstone inlay technique (known as baibaoqian or "one hundred precious things" when many materials are used).
This technique utilizes small, shaped pieces of valuable materials—including stained bone, jade, agate, and carved colored woods—set into the lacquer ground to create a three-dimensional, highly tactile image. The two upper doors depict an elegant arrangement of birds perched among willow and blossoming branches (possibly plum or cherry), suggesting the passage of seasons. The gnarled branches and rocks are often rendered in carved wood, creating high relief, while the leaves and birds are inlaid with colored stones and bone.
The two lower doors feature large, auspicious blossoms, notably peonies (mudan), the "King of Flowers," symbolizing wealth, honour, and prosperity. The overall composition of birds (niao) and flowers (hua), known as "bird-and-flower" (niao hua), is a classical Chinese artistic theme, celebrated for symbolizing harmony in nature. Cabinets decorated with this technique were complex and expensive to produce, requiring the skills of both the lacquer master and the hardstone carver. They were luxury items, typically found in the main halls or reception rooms of wealthy Chinese residences, designed to showcase the owner's status and appreciation for precious materials.

The lacquer shows a deep, aged patina. Minor lifting or localized loss to the delicate hardstone and bone inlays is common and expected, but the overall pictorial effect remains strong.
