Description

Frank Will (French, 1900–1951) Place de la Sainte-Trinité, Paris Watercolour, ink, and pencil on paper Signature: Signed in black ink, lower left
Sheet: 55 cm × 45 cm (≈ 21.7 in × 17.7 in) | Framed: 68 cm × 59 cm (≈ 26.8 in × 23.2 in)
This substantial and evocative watercolour and ink drawing captures the bustling Place de la Sainte-Trinité and the fa?ade of the Church of La Trinité in the 9th arrondissement of Paris.
The composition is a characteristic example of Frank Will's (originally Frank-William Boggs) distinctive style, which synthesized architectural precision with a fluid, Impressionistic treatment of atmosphere and crowd movement. The central focus is the monumental Second Empire fa?ade of the church, rendered with an expert command of perspective and architectural detail using fine black ink and pencil. The artist skillfully contrasts the solid, imposing structure with the ephemeral nature of the surrounding urban life. The foreground is animated by dozens of figures, their forms suggested by swift, calligraphic ink lines and broad washes of white and coloured watercolour. The prominent use of white highlights the figures' clothing (possibly depicting a wedding party or a procession), creating an energetic and luminous effect against the muted, predominantly grey-blue palette of the city. The pale washes in the sky and the wet-on-wet technique in the paving stones effectively convey the distinctive atmosphere of a Parisian square, possibly under damp or diffuse light.
Frank Will dedicated his career almost exclusively to documenting Paris, following in the footsteps of his father, the celebrated American watercolourist Frank Boggs (1855–1926). Will's work matured in the early to mid-20th century, a period when artists often sought to retain traditional representational methods while incorporating the spontaneity and speed necessary to capture a rapidly modernizing urban environment. His preference for watercolour and ink allowed for both the precision of the architecture and the rapid, fluid description of Parisian crowds and weather effects. This work exemplifies his mastery in transforming a familiar Parisian landmark into a lively, atmospheric urban snapshot. Biographical Note: Frank Will (1900–1951) Frank Will (born Frank-William Boggs) was a French painter and watercolourist of American descent, highly regarded for his depictions of Paris. He was the son and pupil of the American artist Frank Boggs (1855–1926), an important figure who had established himself in France and specialized in seascapes and Parisian scenes. Will focused his entire oeuvre on the city of Paris, capturing its major monuments, quays, bridges, and bustling street life. His work provides a valuable artistic record of the city during the interwar and post-war years. His technique is recognized by its rapid execution, mastery of wash and line, and strong graphic quality that often merges the realism of architectural study with the ephemeral light effects of watercolour.
Exhibitions: Frank Will exhibited regularly in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais and the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where his atmospheric urban scenes were consistently well received by collectors.
