Description

A Fine Middle Eastern Dagger (Khanjar or Jambiya) with Damascened Blade and Repoussé Metal Mounts Middle Eastern, Late 19th to Early 20th Century
Total Length (in scabbard): 22 cm | (8.7 inches) Blade Length: 11.5 cm (5 inches)
Curved steel blade with damascening (gold/silver inlay or etched pattern), white metal hilt and scabbard (likely silver or high-grade alloy) executed in repoussé and chasing work.
A striking example of a ceremonial dagger, characterized by a distinctively curved, double-edged blade typical of the Khanjar or Jambiya form prevalent across the Arabian Peninsula and the wider Islamic world. The Blade: The steel blade displays an overall golden-brown patination and is the focal point of the dagger's craftsmanship. It is distinguished by intricate damascening (likely koftgari or an etched pattern simulating true Damascus steel).
This embellishment covers a significant portion of the blade's surface, featuring complex geometric, vegetal, or calligraphic motifs. The curved profile is designed for thrusting and cutting, while the decorative work elevates its status from a utilitarian weapon to a symbol of honour and artistry. The Hilt and Scabbard: The hilt (handle) and the companion scabbard are constructed from white metal (identified as silver or a silver-coloured alloy) and are unified by a rich decorative scheme. The hilt is bulbous, flaring significantly at the pommel with a clamshell or fan-like terminal, and is covered in intricate repoussé and chasing work.
The decoration typically features elaborate floral scrolls (islimi or arabesque), geometric knots, and often highly stylized human or mythological figures within cartouches, depending on the precise regional origin. The scabbard is of a conforming shape and would originally have completely encased the blade, repeating the decorative motifs of the hilt. This piece stands as a testament to the enduring tradition of Islamic metalwork and blade-making. Daggers of this type were not merely weapons but vital components of male ceremonial dress, signifying the wearer's social status, wealth, and tribal identity.
The use of a visually complex blade, whether true Wootz/Damascus steel (historically renowned for its strength and pattern) or a highly skilled damascened imitation, indicates a high-status commission. The lavish silver-metal mounts, executed in detailed repoussé, point towards a wealthy patron and the skill of a master metalworker. The specific style of the hilt's flared pommel and the overall ornamentation may suggest an origin influenced by the Ottoman, Persian (Qajar), or Levantine metalworking traditions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where the fusion of Western and traditional Islamic decorative elements was common. This object is a compelling artefact of the material culture of the period.

French Private Collection

The piece exhibits a rich, aged patina consistent with its age. The blade's damascening is visible but may show signs of wear or loss to the inlaid material. The white metal fittings on the hilt and scabbard show expected tarnish and minor handling marks to the repoussé work.
