This dynamic and sensuous bronze group, with its rich dark patina, depicts a Bacchic scene—a subject closely associated with the celebrated French Neoclassical sculptor Claude Michel, known as Clodion. Clodion’s original terracotta and marble models, characterized by their playful, intimate, and often erotic interpretations of classical mythology, were highly influential and frequently reproduced in bronze throughout the 19th century. The group features a female figure, a Nymph or Bacchante, and a male figure, likely a Satyr or Faun. The Nymph is elegantly draped in classical attire, emphasizing her movement as she raises a shallow cup or cymbal aloft, suggesting a moment of dance or ritual offering. The Satyr, partially draped in a simple animal skin and crowned with a vine wreath, leans into her, capturing the spirited energy of a Bacchanalian festival. The figures are intertwined in a moment of dynamic motion, creating a strong upward and diagonal momentum typical of Rococo and Neoclassical theatrical compositions.
