Description

A Pair of Japanese Lacquer and Abalone Inlaid Kiri Hibachis (Brazier Bowls) Japan Period: Meiji Period (1868–1912)
(Each Hibachi): Height: 16 cm (≈6.3 inches) | Diameter: 21 cm (≈8.3 inches)
Paulownia wood (Kiri) coated in lacquer, inlaid with mother-of-pearl (Abalone), with copper liners.
This matched pair of small Hibachis (portable braziers) is a fine example of Japanese decorative lacquerware from the Meiji period, combining elegant wood carving with the intricate inlay technique. The deep, rounded, cylindrical bowls are carved from Paulownia wood (Kiri), a light and durable wood favored in Japan.
These vessels were traditionally used indoors to hold burning charcoal for heating purposes, such as warming hands or boiling water for tea. he pieces retain their original copper inserts, which would have lined the interior to safely contain the charcoal and ash. The hibachis are presented in their original pine storage box, a practice that underscores the value and care taken for the objects. he exterior of the kiri wood is finished with a deep brown lacquer, providing a lustrous, woodgrain-like background for the decoration.
The surface is finely inlaid with the following: Thin pieces of mother-of-pearl (Abalone shell) are cut and inlaid into the lacquer. The design features delicate scrolling vines and leaves (possibly autumn ivy or gourds), rendered in both the shimmering abalone and soft gold/ochre lacquers. The mother-of-pearl creates an iridescent, subtly glowing effect against the dark ground.
The Hibachi was an essential piece of Japanese domestic life in the late 19th century. Pieces crafted from kiri wood and decorated with lacquer and abalone inlay were luxury items, reflecting the period's high level of technical artistry and the strong patronage of fine crafts.
