Set of 7 historical Engravings of cities of China and Indonesia, XIXth Century
1.Engraving depicting a panoramic landscape of Beijing, China, featuring mountains in the background, a long wall or bridge, and people and animals in the foreground.
2. Engraving depicting a detailed historical map of the city of Batavia (modern-day Jakarta, Indonesia) and its castle in 1669.
Batavia was the capital of the Dutch East Indies, located in what is now Jakarta.
Founded by the Dutch in 1619, the city became the commercial hub of the Dutch East India Company’s trade network in Asia.
The map, bearing the Dutch inscription ‘Ware affbeeldinge wegens het Casteel ende Stadt BATAVIA Eylant JAVA Anno 1669’, depicts the fortified city, its canals, and the castle, reflecting Dutch architecture and urban planning of the time.”
