Description

A Cast and Patinated Bronze Figure of Amphitrite France, early 19th Century, After a Model by Michel Anguier (French, 1612–1686)

Height of bronze: 37.5 cm (14 3/4 in.) Height of base: 9.5 cm (3 3/4 in.) Width of base: 12 cm (4 3/4 in.)
This elegant bronze figure depicts Amphitrite, the Greek goddess of the sea, consort of Poseidon, and queen of the ocean. The figure is an 18th-century cast derived from a model by the highly influential French Baroque sculptor Michel Anguier. The goddess is captured in a graceful, standing pose, displaying the balance and classical contrapposto favored by the Baroque and Neoclassical periods. Her weight is shifted, and she is presented with a serene, dignified expression. She is partially draped with a loose fabric that encircles her hips and is held over her left arm, simultaneously modest and revealing, emphasizing the sculptural ideal of the female form. The figure is supported or flanked by a dolphin or sea creature, a key attribute that definitively identifies her as Amphitrite (or sometimes Venus rising from the sea).
She holds a piece of fabric or drapery in her lowered hand, further adding to the fluid movement of the composition. Michel Anguier was a master of the French Baroque style, trained in Rome, whose works embodied both Italian dynamism and French classical restraint. His models of classical deities were widely admired and became staples of European decorative sculpture, leading to numerous high-quality bronze casts being made throughout the 18th century, such as this example. The bronze exhibits a rich, warm, dark patina. The significant weight of the piece (4.41 kg) suggests a high-quality casting typical of French foundries producing decorative bronze furniture mounts or independent statuettes for the aristocracy during the 18th and thea early 19th century.
This bronze is an important piece of the French collecting tradition, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the grand style of the 17th-century masters through the succeeding decorative periods. Michel Anguier was a leading French sculptor of the 17th century, renowned as a key representative of the Classical Baroque style that characterized the court of Louis XIV. raining and Roman Influence: Born in Eu, France, in 1612, Anguier trained first in Paris with his elder brother, Fran?ois Anguier, before spending a crucial decade in Rome (c. 1641–1651). In Rome, he was heavily influenced by the two titans of the Baroque—Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Alessandro Algardi—as well as the painter Nicolas Poussin, forging a style that masterfully blended Italian dynamism with French classical restraint.
Upon returning to Paris, his career flourished. He executed major commissions, including decorations for the apartments of Queen Anne of Austria in the Louvre Palace, and grand public works like the bas-reliefs for the Porte Saint-Denis (1674). Anguier was a distinguished academic. He was accepted into the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1668 and was appointed professor in 1669 and Rector in 1671. His lectures at the Academy were highly regarded. His works were often reduced for private display. The Musée du Louvre holds a set of four statuettes in bronze, including figures of Jupiter, Junon, Mars, and Amphitrite, which were presented to Louis XIV in 1693, confirming the historical importance of the model upon which the present lot is based.
