Description

A Pair of Black Lacquer and Polychrome Trays China, Qing Dynasty,Qianlong Period, 1736–1795)
Height: 1.8 cm (0.7 inches) | Diameter: 13.8 cm (5.4 inches)
Lacquer on wood or composite base, decorated with gilt and coloured lacquer (polychromy) on a polished black ground.
This finely decorated pair of miniature lacquer trays (pan) represents the high standard of artistry achieved in Chinese lacquer work during the mid-Qing Dynasty. Their small scale suggests they were used as containers for precious objects, sweets, or as components of a specialized scholar's desk set. Decoration and Technique: The trays feature a complex technique involving multiple layers of lacquer: The surface is covered in a deep, lustrous black lacquer ground, which provides a dramatic contrast for the pictorial scenes. The interior of each tray is decorated with detailed natural landscapes executed in a mixture of gold and polychrome (coloured) lacquer. The compositions focus on auspicious animals in their natural settings;
Tray I (Right): Depicts creatures in a water lily/lotus pond, likely a frog or toad and possibly a water bird (nián nián yǒu yú abundance). The lotus symbolizes purity.
Tray II (Left): Depicts creatures in a terrestrial landscape, likely rabbits nestled amongst rocks and floral sprays (rabbits often symbolize the moon and longevity). Both central compositions are neatly enclosed within a fine gilt border, enhancing their preciousness. Lacquer trays and boxes were highly valued luxury goods, requiring immense skill and time to produce. The Qing court and wealthy literati prized pieces that were not only functional but also embodied refined taste and auspicious symbolism.
The small scale of these trays suggests they were intended for intimate, high-status use.

Noted craquelure (fine network of cracks in the lacquer surface) and minor localized areas of polychromy loss are present, which are characteristic of 18th-century lacquer that has experienced natural aging and environmental changes.
