A Set of Four Chinese Export "Four Elements" Reverse on Glass Paintings China (Canton/Guangzhou for the European Market),Qing Dynasty,Qianlong Period, 1736–1795)
Without Frame: 39 cm×28.2 cm (≈15.3 inches×11.1 inches) With Frame: 44 cm×32.8 cm (≈17.3 inches×12.9 inches)
Oil and watercolour painted directly onto the reverse side of glass panels
This highly unusual and significant set of four reverse glass paintings illustrates the Four Classical Elements Earth, Air, Fire, and Water a thematic quartet popular in European art from the 16th to 18th centuries. This collection perfectly encapsulates the creative adaptation of Western aesthetic taste by highly skilled Chinese export workshops in Canton. The paintings were executed using the specialized reverse painting on glass technique, where the artist applies the design directly to the back of the glass in reverse order (details first, background last). This method required immense skill and planning.
These works represent a crucial facet of the Chinoiserie trade: The glass panels themselves were often imported from Europe or carefully selected. The Chinese artists were commissioned to reproduce or adapt European prints and paintings, in this case, adopting the dramatic, robust style of 17th-century Flemish or Italianate Baroque schools (note the muscular figures, classical drapery, and rich chiaroscuro). Once completed and framed, the paintings were shipped back to Europe, primarily to England and France, satisfying the strong demand for exotic, yet culturally familiar, decorative art.
Water: A dramatic sea-borne procession,Neptune (or similar deity) wielding a trident, seated on a chariot drawn by sea creatures, surrounded by nymphs and tritons. Cupids float above
Fire: A mythological scene set in a dark cave or forge. Vulcan (Hephaestus) or another deity resting, while cyclopes or attendants toil at the forge. Figures on clouds (possibly Venus and attendants) descend from a bright sky opening.
Earth: A mythological triumph or bacchanalia in a wooded landscape.Figures (possibly Bacchus/Dionysus or Ceres) in a chariot drawn by lions or mythological beasts, surrounded by satyrs and nymphs carrying grapes or baskets, symbolizing bounty and harvest.
Air:A coastal or sky scene with figures ascending/descending.Figures on clouds (possibly Juno/Hera or other sky deities) presiding over a dramatic coast with distant ships. A strong wind or storm theme is suggested by the dynamic figures. The Frames:
The paintings are presented in their original black lacquer frames, typically decorated with scrolling gilt patterns or geometric bands, which were also frequently supplied by the Cantonese workshops, completing the decorative Export package.

The paintings show some signs of oxidation or clouding to the delicate pigments and background, which is common and expected for 18th-century reverse glass work. Noted is the presence of two cracks in one of the glass panels (likely the Air panel), a fragile condition inherent to the medium. The frames show minor wear to the gilt lacquer
