Description

A Magnificent Pair of Gilt-Bronze and Cloisonné Enamel Vases with Dragon Handles China, Qing Dynasty, Jiaqing Period (1796–1820)
Height: (12.2 inches)
A magnificent pair of bronze-bodied cloisonné enamel vases, exhibiting the technical mastery and rich artistry characteristic of the Imperial taste. The vases feature a complex, archaistic form, combining a faceted, multi-sided geometric base (reminiscent of ancient ritual vessels) with a tall, cylindrical neck. The entire surface is exquisitely adorned with polychrome floral motifs—including chrysanthemums and other blossoms—set against a brilliant, finely detailed turquoise-blue ground. The bases feature panels of geometric diaper patterns, contrasting beautifully with the main body decoration.
Each vase is fitted with a pair of finely cast and gilded zoomorphic handles, resembling stylized dragons or kui dragons, which clasp the neck and the upper section of the faceted body, lending an air of imposing grandeur. The mouth rims are finished with a band of fine gilded copperwork, typically decorated with a delicate scroll or formal border.
The foot of the vase bears a cast gilt-bronze mark of Teh Ch'eng (德成).Recent studies conducted in China indicate that the workshop Teh Ch'eng (formerly known as Teh Hsing Ch'eng) was established circa 1860, based on information recovered from associated packing boxes. The emergence of such private bronze and cloisonné workshops was a direct result of the limited budget of the Qing court following the Opium Wars. The court could no longer employ its large roster of skilled craftspeople, resulting in their dismissal. These workers subsequently opened private workshops or factories in Peking to serve local privileged families and the civil market.Cloisonné enamel, previously reserved primarily for the royal family, was then permitted to circulate among civil society. Workers began stamping their products with workshop marks to serve as trademarks.Despite their private origin, works of better quality from these workshops were sometimes acquired and absorbed into the Imperial Collection.
Notably, two vases bearing the Teh Ch'eng workshop mark (德成) are known to exist in the Palace Collection in Beijing.Furthermore, as mentioned in a recently published article, some Imperial items were sent to this workshop for repair and were subsequently marked by the workshop after restoration. The current pair thus represents the continuation of exceptional Imperial-level craftsmanship in a private workshop setting during the 19th century.
