Description

A Fine Chinese Export Black and Gilt Lacquer Chest China,Qing Dynasty, likely Qianlong Period, 1736–1795)
Height: 23 cm (9.1 inches) | Width: 54.6 cm (21.5 inches) | Length: 32 cm (12.6 inches)
Wood, covered in black lacquer and decorated with gilt pigments
This rectangular chest, with a hinged flat top, is a quintessential example of Chinese Export lacquerware produced primarily in Canton (Guangzhou) during the 18th century for the burgeoning European market. These pieces were highly prized for their exotic materials and intricate decoration, used in Western homes for storage, especially of tea or documents. The chest is lavishly decorated on all sides the top, front, back, and both ends with a continuous composition executed in rich gilt pigments set against a deep, glossy black lacquer ground.
The scenes are populated by elaborate pavilions nestled amongst stylized mountains, trees, and meandering watercourses. Small staffage figures are depicted engaging in various daily or leisurely pursuits, such as crossing arched bridges, fishing, or attending to dignitaries. This pictorial style, characterized by dense detail and an elevated perspective, aims to present an idealized view of Chinese life. The gilt decoration often includes a finely painted border or floral sprays, typical of the period's preference for continuous visual narrative. The chest is sturdily constructed from wood, with the lacquer applied in multiple layers before the final gilding. The corners are reinforced with functional and decorative copper corner mounts, while the front features a chased gilt-metal escutcheon and lock plate. Gilt-metal carrying handles are affixed to the sides, attesting to its use as a portable object.
The quality of the decorative painting and the use of metal fittings are characteristic of high-quality Qing Dynasty export craftsmanship. Lacquer chests were among the most fashionable imports arriving in Europe via the East India Companies, fulfilling the Western desire for Chinoiserie and exotic furnishings. This piece reflects the commercial success and technical mastery of the Canton workshops in adapting traditional Chinese decorative arts to suit foreign tastes and practical uses.

French private collection, Paris, France

The chest is in good antique condition, commensurate with its age. There is expected rubbing and minor localized loss to the delicate gilt decoration, particularly on the flat surfaces of the top and edges. The black lacquer retains a good degree of its original luster. Metal fittings show expected tarnish.
