Description

A Gilt and Silvered Metal Brooch Set with Coral and Semi-Precious Stones Tibet or Sino-Tibetan Border Region,19th Century (Late Qing Dynasty)
Length: 7 cm (≈ 2.8 in)
Silvered and gilt metal (likely copper or brass alloy), set with coral, turquoise/green stone, and applied semi-precious beads (possibly amber or glass simulating amber).
This ornate brooch is a striking example of traditional Sino-Tibetan personal adornment, demonstrating the characteristic fusion of fine metalwork and vibrant stone inlay found in the Himalayan region. The design is highly elaborate, focusing on a central motif that appears stylized, perhaps representing a mythical creature, a ceremonial knot, or an abstract floral canopy. The overall form is symmetrical, with prominent, sweeping volutes or stylized wings on either side, giving the piece a dramatic, curvilinear silhouette.
The brooch utilizes a central cabochon of coral (or a material simulating coral) as its focal point, often representing the precious jewel (Chintamani) or signifying purity and vitality in Buddhist contexts. This central stone is framed by intricate gilt metalwork, possibly representing a crown or an elaborate setting. Additional decorative elements include a small green stone (likely turquoise or malachite) and various beads (appearing gold in the image, possibly amber, gilded metal, or glass) attached to the lower register, enhancing the texture and polychromatic effect.
The piece is constructed using a metal alloy base (such as copper or brass) that has been selectively gilt and silvered. This technique of combining contrasting metals and plating was highly popular in Himalayan metalwork to achieve a luxurious visual effect at a manageable cost. The gemstones are set using the traditional bezel setting or tightly enclosed within the metalwork. The quality of the design and the generous use of coral and turquoise were powerful status symbols. Jewellery of this complexity was typically worn by aristocratic women or monks/lamas on ceremonial attire, belts, or hats, indicating the wearer's wealth and religious devotion.
The late 19th-century period saw a peak in the production of such distinctive, highly decorative pieces for both local use and early international export.

(Length: 7cm - (2,8 inches))

French private collection

The metalwork exhibits a rich, aged patina with some loss to the original gilding and silvering, revealing the darker base metal underneath, consistent with its age. All stones appear to be present, though some may exhibit minor scratching or wear. The pin mechanism on the reverse is intact and functional.
