Description

A turquoise-glaze twin-handle vase China, Qing Dynasty, Early 18th Century
Height:35 cm (13 3/4 in.)
The vase is sturdily potted in a form inspired by archaic bronzes, featuring a compressed globular body rising to a tall, waisted neck with a flared, galleried rim. The neck is flanked by a pair of applied stylized mythical beast handles (likely chilong or lion masks) and detailed with a raised horizontal rib (fillet) separating the neck from the shoulder. The vessel is covered overall in a brilliant, glossy turquoise glaze of 'peacock-blue' tone, displaying a fine network of crazing characteristic of this glaze type. The glaze pools darker within the recesses of the handles and the incised details, accentuating the sculptural quality.

French Private Collection

The vibrant turquoise glaze seen on this vase, often referred to as "peacock blue" (kongque lan) or "kingfisher blue" (feicui), experienced a significant revival and technical refinement during the Kangxi period (1662–1722) and continued into the early 18th century.Unlike high-fired feldspathic glazes, this turquoise color is an alkaline glaze derived from copper oxide. It was typically fired at a lower temperature in a muffle kiln, often applied directly over a pre-fired unglazed biscuit body. This technique, while difficult to control, resulted in the brilliant, jewel-like luminosity and the distinct, fine crackle seen on the present example. The form of this vase is an 18th-century interpretation of ancient ritual bronze vessels (such as the lei or zun), reflecting the Qing dynasty court's fascination with archaism (fanggu). The combination of the ancient, heavy form with the bright, exuberant color of the glaze is a hallmark of the innovative ceramic production of the early Qing dynasty.
