This work is a striking example of the "Opera Figures" theme, which is central to the oeuvre of the Chinese Modernist master Lin Fengmian. The artist sought to reconcile traditional Chinese painting techniques with modern Western aesthetics, resulting in an immediately recognizable and highly sought-after style. The painting depicts two opera figures, likely from the repertoire of the Peking Opera, captured in a moment of dramatic movement or combat. The composition is characterized by the bold and expressive brushwork reminiscent of Western influences, particularly Expressionism and Fauvism, which Lin discovered during his studies in France in the 1920s. Dark, rapid ink outlines define the figures, while the color is applied in vibrant flat areas (notably the bright red and green) that evoke the sumptuous costumes of the opera. The area around the figures is treated with economy, using the neutral tone of the paper (similar to Chinese xuan paper) to create a flat background, emphasizing the theatricality of the scene.
The theme of opera figures is a constant in Lin Fengmian's work, allowing him to condense the essence of movement, costume, and emotional drama into a semi-abstract yet energetic form. The poses are dynamic, with a sense of distortion and simplification drawing from both Chinese folk art and Western modernism (notably the influence of Picasso and Rouault). The work is presented in a distressed, crackled frame, enhancing its historical character and physical presence. Works from Lin Fengmian's Opera Figures series are among his most famous and highly valued on the international market, illustrating his quest for synthesis between Chinese and Western art and his pivotal role in the development of modern Chinese art in the 20th century. Bibliography: Lin Fengmian (林風眠) (1900–1991) Lin Fengmian was a pioneering Chinese painter and art educator widely regarded as one of the founders of modern Chinese painting. He is celebrated for his unique synthesis of Chinese ink painting traditions with the expressive qualities of Western Modernism. Early Life and Education (1900–1925) Born on November 22, 1900, in Meixian, Guangdong province, China. His father was a painter, exposing him to traditional Chinese art early on. In 1919, he traveled to France as part of a work-study program. He studied at the école Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Dijon Art College, immersing himself in the European avant-garde. He was heavily influenced by Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, and Expressionism, particularly the works of European masters like Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Rouault.
He exhibited his oil painting The Autumn at the prestigious Salon d'Automne in Paris in 1922. Art Educator and Innovator (1925–1966) Lin returned to China in 1925 and was immediately appointed Director of the National Beijing Fine Art School. In 1928, he co-founded and became the first principal of the National Academy of Art in Hangzhou (now the China Academy of Art), where he was instrumental in introducing Western art concepts and modernizing art education in China. He was a key proponent of the "New Art Movement," advocating for a blend of Chinese spirit and Western technique. During this period, he developed his distinctive style, using Chinese paper and ink but incorporating Western principles of color, volume, and composition. His major themes included elegant women, still lifes, landscapes, and his iconic Opera Figures.
He drew inspiration from diverse sources, including Han dynasty stone engravings and Song dynasty porcelain. Political Persecution and Later Years (1966–1991) During the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), Lin faced persecution. Fearing censorship, he tragically destroyed many of his experimental works by soaking and flushing them down his toilet. He was subsequently imprisoned for four years. In 1977, he was permitted to leave mainland China and moved to Hong Kong, where he spent his final years tirelessly recreating his lost works and continuing to paint. He is known for mentoring a generation of influential Chinese artists, including Zhao Wuji (Zao Wou-Ki), Wu Guanzhong, and Chu Teh-Chun. Died on August 12, 1991, in Hong Kong. Lin Fengmian's legacy is that of a visionary who successfully navigated the cultural tensions of 20th-century China, forging a unique artistic path that is recognized for its profound emotional depth and its seamless fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics.
