Description

A Carved Pale Celadon Jade "Scholar's" Teapot (Cháhú) China, Late Ming Dynasty, 17th Century
Height: 9 cm (3.5 inches) - Length: 14.3 cm (5.6 inches)
A Carved Celadon Jade (Nephrite), with natural brown inclusions.
This finely carved teapot is an exceptional example of Chinese jade craftsmanship, appealing directly to the aesthetic of the scholar-gentry class (shidafu). Its small, architectural form and detailed subject matter elevate it beyond simple utility, marking it as a treasure for the scholar's studio. The teapot is carved from a single block of jade into a sophisticated, tapering rectangular form with squared shoulders and a slightly domed cover. It is fitted with a short, curved spout and a C-scroll handle, both decorated with stylized cloud motifs. The attachments to the body are cleverly carved with stylized dragons or chilongs, lending an archaic, energetic quality to the structure. The celadon jade displays excellent translucency and is beautifully variegated with natural brown inclusions and veining, which the carver has deliberately used to accent the base and edges of the handle.
The body of the teapot is decorated on all sides with scenes executed in fine shallow relief (low relief carving): The main panels depict figures (likely Daoist Immortals or Sages) in a tranquil, rocky landscape setting amid swirling clouds. One panel shows a figure accompanied by a crane, a potent symbol of longevity and the spiritual journey. Another panel features a figure accompanied by a deer (or possibly a crane as well), which also symbolizes longevity. These subjects underscore the teapot's connection to the Daoist quest for immortality and the secluded life of a scholar. The cover is flat and subtly decorated with alternating floral and scroll motifs, contrasting with the figural scenes on the body. The teapot boasts a significant and traceable provenance, linking it to the history of Sino-French relations and naval service in Asia.

Objects acquired by naval officers stationed in the treaty ports often represent the finest, most portable items available through the Imperial trade networks
