Description

A rare imperial carved three-color cinnabar carved lacquer "dragon" table screen China, Qing Dynasty, Kangxi period (1662-1722)
Height: 26 in. (66 cm) Width: 16 7/8 in. (43 cm) Depth: 9 7/8 in. (25 cm)
Superbly carved through varying layers of rich cinnabar, dark olive-green, and ochre lacquer (ticai).
The rectangular screen panel is deeply carved in high relief to depict a ferocious five-clawed dragon (long) writhing dynamically amidst tumultuous, stratified ruyi-shaped clouds. The dragon is rendered with exceptional vigor, featuring finely incised scales, a sinuous body, and a powerful gaze, seemingly in pursuit of a flaming pearl of wisdom. The central scene is reserved against a ground of ochre geometric diaper patterns and framed by a broad border of intricate lotus and peony scrolls carved in cinnabar against a green lacquer ground.
The panel slides into a matching stand, supported by two upright posts flanking a central apron carved with archaistic kui-dragon scrollwork and geometric motifs. The whole rests upon a stepped base terminating in four sturdy, scroll-form feet, richly decorated with key-fret bands and stylized floral designs. This screen is a masterwork of the Kangxi period, distinguished by the sheer power of the carving and the presence of the five-clawed dragon. During the Qing dynasty, the five-clawed dragon was the emblem of the Emperor, strictly reserved for the Imperial court. Unlike the more regimented and stylized dragons of the later Qianlong period, this dragon exhibits the raw muscularity, wide jaw, and wild mane characteristic of the Kangxi era, reflecting the Manchu court's strength during the early Qing dynasty.
This magnificent item shows the Technique called Ticai ( chinese method of Carved Polychrome Lacquer). This tecnique involves application of multiple of layers of diffrent color lacquer in a specific sequence likely ochre (bottom), green (middle), and red (top)As seen in the detail images, the background features a precise "wan" (swastika) diaper pattern in ochre/yellow, representing "ten thousand years" or longevity. The floral borders reveal the green layer beneath the red, adding depth and contrast. This stratigraphy requires the carver to cut to exact depths to reveal the intended color for each element without error.

Comparative Literature While table screens from the Kangxi period are very rare, the style and technique can be compared to Imperial works preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing.
For a later example of similar technical virtuosity, see the Imperial Carved Three-Color Lacquer Stand (Qianlong/Jiaqing Period) sold at Christie's New York, 29 March 2006, Lot 464. While the Christie's example dates to the mid-Qing dynasty and features a different form (a hat stand or vase stand), it shares the same rare ticai palette (red, green, and yellow) and the Imperial motif of dragons amidst clouds and waves. The present lot, however, retains the robust, high-relief carving style associated with the earlier Kangxi workshops.
