拍品描述 翻译

Description

Sitting with his legs apart on a separately carved rock bench, a leaf cloak draped over his monk's robe and kesa, partially covered by the cloth placed over his hair bun and head. The figure holds a staff (shakujō) and a scroll in his hands, and wears high geta. The skin is painted brownish red to black, the robes red and black, with the outer garment featuring black dots and the headscarf a crinkled pattern. The rock is firmly mounted on a rectangular base with a leafy border. In the seventh century En no Gyōja, who is also known by many other names, lived as an ascetic (gyōja) on Mount Katsuragi for three decades, where he subjected himself to ascetic practices. As a result, he developed magical powers, mastered the art of sorcery and acquired knowledge of medicinal plants. When the syncretistic Shugendō sect evolved during the Heian period, he was designated as its progenitor. During the Kamakura period, numerous sculptures of the saint were created and a specific iconography was established, which remained unchanged well into the Edo period. He is portrayed sitting on a rock usually holding a stick (shakujō) in his right hand and a scroll in his left. His beard, long hair tied up in a bun, leaf cloak and high rustic geta refer to his ascetic life.
