Description

All three figures seated in padmasana on tall double-lotus pedestals with a running pearl border, all wearing fine monastic garments with distinct ornamented borders and a robe leaving the right arm bare, as well as the tall, pointed Gelug hat with long “ears” falling onto the shoulders. Tsongkhapa is depicted with his hands in dharmachakra mudra; his visibly older face radiates calm and enlightened awareness. Two holes on his shoulders were used to attach lotus flowers originally belonging to the figure. The faces are painted, with expressive eyes and refined mouths. The base lids are closed and covered with yellow textile marked by a double vajra. Jé Tsongkhapa Lozang Drakpa (1357–1419) was one of the most influential spiritual masters in Tibetan Buddhism. A brilliant scholar and reformer, Tsongkhapa emphasized strict monastic discipline and the unity of sutra and tantra. In 1409, he founded the Great Prayer Festival (Monlam Chenmo) in Lhasa and established Ganden Monastery, whose name (“Ganden” meaning “joyful”) inspired that of the Gelugpa school, the “Virtuous Ones.” Among his foremost disciples were Gyaltsap Dharma Rinchen (1364–1432) and Kedrup Geleg Pal Zangpo (1385–1438). Gyaltsap, known for his deep scholarship, helped systematize Tsongkhapa’s teachings and became the first abbot of Ganden. Kedrup, a prolific writer and philosopher, later succeeded him as abbot and was instrumental in spreading the Gelug tradition across Tibet. Depictions of Tsongkhapa with his students are a highly popular theme in thangka painting, where the master is typically shown as larger than his disciples, emphasizing his spiritual authority and guidance. In contrast, bronze figure groups portraying Tsongkhapa together with his students are extremely rare, which makes the ensemble presented exceptional, and likely without direct parallels.
