Description

Rectangular in shape with a hinged cover, the central field of which is raised, with slightly curved sides and an ornate lower edge, all supported by four feline feet. The lid depicts two kirtimukha and two crocodile-like makara at the centre, flanked by four princely figures and elephants. The back of the casket, as well as one side, shows busts of female creatures holding the stems of rich floral scrolls in their surroundings; the other side features two dragon-like creatures, while the front is adorned with an intricate and dense design of blossoming flowers. The top panel and sides are further decorated with delicate floral and leafy borders. Completed with fine gilt mountings, hinges, and a lock. Accompanying is a wooden case with hinged, curved sides and a raised lid, echoing the form of the casket. The corners and side edges are mounted with grey metal; on the sides are C-shaped handles, at the front a small lock, and on the lid an empty metal cartouche. The interior is lined with blue velvet. Ceylon (Sri Lanka) had been known for its fine ivory carving from at least the early 16th century, though the craft itself likely has pre-colonial roots connected to Buddhist and royal artistic traditions. The island’s fame for intricate ivory objects became widely recognized during the Kingdom of Kotte period (late 15th–early 16th century), when workshops around the capital produced luxury goods for both local and foreign patrons. The use of ivory caskets as diplomatic gifts began around the 1540s, notably under King Bhuvanekabahu VII (rule years 1521–1551), who sent a richly carved ivory casket—mounted in gilt silver—to King Joao III of Portugal. This tradition persisted into the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when elaborately carved Sri Lankan ivory caskets were presented to Queen Victoria and other members of the British royal family. The present lot is particularly stylistically related to several caskets presented to British monarchs and preserved in the Royal Collection Trust, such as RCIN 6139, RCIN 70800, and RCIN 6140. This lot contains materials which require a CITES licence for export outside of the EU contract countries. We would like to inform you that such licenses are usually not granted.
