Description

A page from the Bhagavata Purana series. As Devaki gives birth to her eighth son, Krishna, he reveals himself to his parents in the divine form of Vishnu in the upper left corner of the painting, before returning to the form of a child. The sacred significance of the event is emphasised by the presence of Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu outside the cell. As Vasudeva receives instructions from Vishnu, his fetters miraculously fall off, and he carefully carries the child, wrapped in an orange cloth, out of the prison. His escape goes unnoticed, as all guards and watch dogs are rendered asleep by a deep slumber. Black border and light, red-speckled margins. Framed and glazed. Vasudeva and Devaki were married in Mathura, yet their joy was overshadowed by a dark prophecy: Devaki’s eighth son was fated to slay her brother, the tyrant Kamsa. In fear, Kamsa imprisoned the couple and slew their first six children at birth. The seventh, Balarama, was miraculously transferred to the womb of Rohini. When Devaki bore her eighth son, Krishna, he revealed himself in the divine form of Vishnu. Following Vishnu’s instructions, Vasudeva carried the newborn safely out of Kamsa’s prison. Across the Yamuna, he reached Gokul and exchanged Krishna with the daughter of Yashoda and Nanda. There, Krishna was raised as their own, his true identity hidden, and destiny preserved. This clever exchange ensured the child’s safety and set the stage for the fulfilment of the prophecy.
