Renato Cristiano attended courses at Museo Artistico Industriale and the Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia. He arrived in Bali in 1955, where he became curator of the Museum Puri Lukisan in Ubud. During this period he often frequented Indonesia's first president Sukarno who asked the artist for advice on his art collection. After the 1965 political turmoil in Indonesia, Cristiano and his wife left Bali for Rome. However, Indonesia remains also later the favourite subject of his paintings.
