Chahira Issai (born 1921) was a master of Wajima lacquerware from Ishikawa Prefecture, representing a lineage of artisans specializing in tea ceremony utensils. The title “Issai” was originally granted to the first Chahira Issai by the head of the Sohen school of tea ceremony and has since been passed down through three generations. The lacquerware studio, founded in Wajima in 1947, has continued for over 70 years, maintaining a reputation. The second-generation Issai, Yoshio Chahira, was appointed as one of the ten official lacquerware artisans of the Sekishu school in 1993, carrying forward his father’s dedication to both tradition and innovation. Through collaborations, such as the titanium lacquer screen created with Nippon Steel Corporation, the Chahira family expanded the expressive potential of Wajima lacquerware into the modern era.

The hibachi (literally ‘fire bowl’) was an essential household implement in Japan from the Edo period onward, serving as a portable brazier for heating and occasionally for lighting pipes or warming tea. Traditionally filled with charcoal and lined with metal to contain the heat, hibachi were used in both domestic and ceremonial contexts, often placed at the center of social gatherings during the colder months.
