Description

AN UNUSUAL INLAID RINPA-STYLE TIERED SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX) DEPICTING THE IRISES AT YATSUHASHI (EIGHT BRIDGES)

Style of Ogata Korin, unsigned
Japan, 20th century

Of tiered rectangular form with rounded edges, superbly decorated in gold takamaki-e on a lustrous roiro ground, enriched with a harmonious blend of mixed-media inlays. The inrobuta (flush-fitting) lid depicts irises at Yatsuhashi, the blossoms thickly inlaid with aogai (mother-of-pearl), the reeds rendered in bold gold, and the bridge formed from pewter strips, the design extending seamlessly across the cover and sides of the box. The interior of the lid is finished with a delicate wave pattern on a sprinkled roiro ground, matching the decoration of the interior, which houses the original implements: a silver suiteki (water-dropper), two brushes, and a fitted rectangular suzuri (inkstone). The lower tier is similarly adorned with the wave motif, while the rims are finished in fundame.

Inscription: To the cover of the tomobako inscribed OGATA KORIN saku, Yatsuhashi Makie, suzuribako, ichi, 尾形光琳作、八橋蒔絵、硯箱、壹, [One item, suzuribako, (with the design of the) Yatsuhashi by Ogata Korin].

SIZE 10.9 x 13.7 x 19.4 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear.

With a wood tomobako (storage box).

The design of the present suzuribako derives from the celebrated “Eight Bridges” (Yatsuhashi) episode from Chapter 9 of the Tales of Ise (Ise monogatari), a theme famously depicted by Ogata Korin and beloved throughout Japanese art. The story recounts the travels of the poet and courtier Ariwara no Narihira (825–880), grandson of Emperor Heizei, who, exiled from Kyoto following a scandalous affair, stops at Yatsuhashi in Mikawa Province, where a river divides into eight channels, each spanned by its own bridge. Moved by the beauty of the irises (kakitsubata) blooming along the banks, he composes a wistful poem expressing longing for his distant wife. The poem, included in the Kokin wakashu anthology (c. 905), forms an acrostic from the word kakitsubata, an ingenious play on the flower’s name:

Karagoromo

kitsutsu narenishi

tsuma shi areba

harubaru kinuru

tabi o shi zo omou

I wear robes with well-worn hems,
Reminding me of my dear wife
I fondly think of always,
So as my sojourn stretches on
Ever farther from home,
Sadness fills my thoughts.

Although the original bridges have long vanished, the story’s poignant imagery, rises by the water’s edge and the flowing bridges, endured as a symbol of transience, love, and the refined sensibility of Heian court culture, resonating in painting and lacquerware through later centuries.

Museum comparison:
