Description

MARUYAMA OKYO: A TRIPTYCH DEPICTING PEONIES, JUROJIN AND MINOGAME

By Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795), signed and sealed Okyo 應挙
Japan, dated 1792

Watercolors, gouache, and ink on silk. Each mounted as a hanging scroll within a silk brocade frame with bone jikusaki (roller ends). One finely painted to depict lush peonies in full bloom, their soft pink petals and verdant leaves accompanied by two delicately painted butterflies fluttering above; other painted with Jurojin, the Daoist god of longevity, standing serenely with his staff and accompanied by a white deer; the last depicting three minogame making their way towards a quiet shoreline.

Inscription: Each signed to the lower section OKYO and with a red seal.

Condition: Good condition with some wear, few stains, expected foxing, creasing, and wormholes with associated repairs. The mounting with usual traces of wear and use and few small tears to the edges. One roller end repaired.

With an inscribed wood tomobako (storage box) reading: Early Spring, Kensei 4 (1792), Painted by ōkyo.

Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795), from present-day Kameoka, Kyoto, was a student at the Kano School of painting. He gained much renown after his first commission, the Seven Misfortunes and Seven Fortunes. As his public image grew, Okyo founded his own school in Kyoto, the Maruyama School of painting, dedicated to his style of blending Western naturalism with Eastern decorative designs. He taught his students to rely on nature to render images in a realistic picture of light, shadow, and forms. The school grew popular, and branches soon appeared in other locations, including Osaka. Much of the school's work is today preserved at Daijo-ji, a temple in Kasumi. Noteworthy pupils include Okyo's son, Maruyama Ozui, Nagasawa Rosetsu, and Matsumura Goshun.
