Kaiho Yutoku (1763–1847), whose given name was Terumichi, was born in Kyoto and became the seventh-generation head of the Kaiho School founded by Kaiho Yusho (1533–1615). He lived in Nishijin, Kyoto, and during the Kansei era he contributed to the sliding screen paintings created for the reconstruction of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. He was recognized as an accomplished artist in his time, being mentioned in the 1830 and 1838 editions of Heian Jinbutsu shi.

Yang Guifei (719–756) is remembered as one of the most celebrated beauties of China and as the favored consort of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty (r. 712–756). She had first been married to the son of the Emperor, yet she captivated Xuanzong in his later years and soon became the object of his profound devotion. Her position at court allowed her to secure high offices for members of her family, which provoked widespread resentment. In 755, during the rebellion led by An Lushan, the Emperor and Yang Guifei fled the capital toward Sichuan accompanied by loyal troops. Upon reaching Mawei, the soldiers, convinced that she was responsible for the unrest, demanded her execution. The Emperor, unable to oppose them, gave his consent and Yang Guifei was put to death.
