Isoda Koryusai (1735–1790) was a Japanese ukiyo-e print designer and painter active during the mid to late Edo period, best known for his prolific output of bijin-ga (images of beautiful women), hashira-e (pillar prints), and bird-and-flower subjects. Born into the samurai class serving the Tsuchiya clan, he became a masterless ronin and relocated to Edo, where he began designing prints around 1769 under the name Haruhiro and later adopted the name Koryusai. In 1782 he was awarded the honorary Buddhist title Hokyo (‘Bridge of the Law’), after which he sometimes signed works with that rank, a mark of official recognition.

Torii Kiyonaga (1752-1815) was a major Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Torii school, celebrated especially for his elegant bijin-ga (images of beautiful women) and his mastery of nishiki-e full-color printing. Born Sekiguchi Shinsuke in Edo, he became head of the Torii school after the death of his mentor Torii Kiyomitsu, despite not being a biological member of the family. During the 1780s, his output of refined portraits of courtesans and fashionable women marked the height of his career, influencing the aesthetic standards of his time. In later years, as the popularity of bijin-ga shifted toward other masters like Utamaro, Kiyonaga devoted more effort to surimono, book illustrations, and painting.
