Description

OHARA KOSON: TWO HERONS IN THE RAIN

By Ohara Koson (1878-1945), signed Shoson with seal Shoson
Japan, c. 1900-1910

Color woodblock print on paper. Vertical o-tanzaku. Signed Shoson with seal Shoson; publisher Kokkeido (Akiyama Buemon), sealed to the lower left. Title Two Herons in the Rain.

Two gray herons (Ardea cinerea) wading in shallow water during a downpour, one standing in a stalking pose, while the other calls with its beak raised, among lotus plants floating on the surface of the water.

SIZE of the sheet 36.4 x 19.1 cm

Provenance: Collection of Frederick and Ellen Wells, thence by descent. Frederick Wells (1927–2005) was born into a prominent Midwest grain family. He retired from the Peavey Company in 1976, at the age of forty-eight, to devote himself to the study and collection of Asian art. Wells earned a Master’s degree in East Asian History in 1980 and, the following year, established the Asian Fine Arts Gallery in Minneapolis, specializing in Asian ceramics, prints, and furniture. Together with his wife, Ellen Wells, he was a longstanding supporter and trustee of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, making significant contributions to the Department of Textiles and the newly established Korean Art gallery. In 2002, the Wells donated a substantial collection of Japanese prints, including an exceptional group of shin hanga works, a gift that greatly enriched and expanded the museum’s holdings of Asian art.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear, slight fading to colors, and some browning to paper. The margins slightly trimmed. A minute speck of foxing along the upper right corner.

Two gray herons (Ardea cinera) wade in the shallows during a downpour. One is in stalking pose and one seems to be calling, beak upturned towards some creature above it. The lotus plants may be seen floating on the surface of the water, a translucent green as seen through the mist of rain. The rain itself is beautifully rendered and falls in irregular curtains. Works published by Kokkeido are considered some of his earliest, and although none of them bear dates they were produced ca. 1900-1910.

Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese painter and woodblock print designer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, part of the shin-hanga (new prints) movement. He is famous as a master of kacho-e (bird-and-flower) designs. Throughout a prolific career, in which he created around 500 prints, he went by three different titles: Ohara Hoson, Ohara Shoson, and Ohara Koson.

Museum comparison:
A closely related print by the same artist, with the identical seal, is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, object number RP-P-1999-505.
