This is a half length portrait of a young woman dressed in the costume of one of the Arab countries, probably Algeria, and holding a vase or water jug in her hand. It was painted circa 1860 by a competent artist, and appears to be French in origin as its style is after the school of such French painters as William Adolphe Bouguereaud, (1825-1905), Alphonse-Etienne Dinet (1861-1929), and P.E. Dubois (1886-1949). A German painter, C. L. Miller (1800-1852) also did work of this type. The leather has been glued to a piece of masonite and the frame if modern. From a letter of examination of work of art or object from Smithsonian Institution on March 18th, 1966. H: 8.725 W: 6.25 Inches
