The Andy Warhol Museum in his native city Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, holds an extensive permanent collection of art and archives. "Warhol had captured something irresistible about the Zeitgeist of American culture in the 1970s."He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design in the Carnegie Institute of Technology in1949, then moved to New York, changed his name to Andy Warhol and became a famous graphic designer. His imagery used in advertising was often executed by means of applying ink to paper and then blotting the ink while still wet. Warhol's work displays a casual approach to image making, in which mistakes and unintentional marks are tolerated. The resulting imagery is often replete with imperfection, smudges and smears. During the 1950s Warhol held exhibitions in galleries in New York and Los Angeles. During the 1960s he began to paint iconic American objects such as dollar bills, mushroom clouds, electric chairs, Campbell's Soup Cans, Coca-Cola bottles. His works included celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Marlon Brando, Muhammad Ali and Elizabeth Taylor, newspaper headlines or photographs of police dogs attacking civil rights protesters. During these years, he founded his studio, "The Factory" and gathered about him a wide range of artists, writers, musicians, and underground celebrities. His work became popular and very controversial. The 1970s were a much quieter decade, compared to the success and scandal of Warhol's work in the 1960s, as he became more entrepreneurial. In 1973 he created his famous portrait of Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong. Warhol's will dictated that his entire estate with the exception of a few modest legacies to family members would go to create a foundation dedicated to the "advancement of the visual arts".
