atsushika Hokusai 'the crazy old painter' woodblock print, 1836 picture size: 7.4 x 5.19 inch frame size: 12.2 x 16.1 inch Katsushika Hokusai 葛飾 北斎(23.09.1760- 10. 05.1849) was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. Born in Edo, Hokusai is best known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (富嶽三十六景 Fugaku Sanjūroku-kei) which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa, created during the 1820s, which is famous throughout the world. Hokusai was born September 23rd 1760 (Tokugawa Period) to an artisan family in Edo, Japan. His childhood name was TokitarŌ. When he was 14 till 18 he was an apprentice to a wood-carver and was then accepted into the studio of Katsukawa ShunshŌ. After one year, Hokusai's name changed for the first time. His master named him ShunrŌ. Under this name he published his first prints, a series of pictures of Kabuki actors published in 1779. 1793, Hokusai began exploring other styles of art. Through French and Dutch copper engravings he began to study European art. The traditional subjects of ukiyo-e were images of courtesans and actors. Hokusai began to focus on landscapes and daily life images from a variety of social levels. This was a breakthrough in ukiyo-e and in Hokusai's career. He associated with the Tawaraya School and adopted the name 'Tawaraya SŌri'. He produced many brush paintings, called surimono, and illustrations for kyŌka ehon (books of humorous poems). 1798, he passed his name on to a pupil. From then on he was an independent artist, for the first time free from ties to a school. His new name was Hokusai Tomisa and then into Katsushika Hokusai, becoming attractive for students, eventually teaching 50 pupils. 1811, age 51, Hokusai changed his name to Taito and created the Hokusai Manga and various etehon, or art manuals. These etehon, beginning 1812 with Quick Lessons in Simplified Drawing, a convenient way to make money and attract more students.1820 Hokusai changed his name into 'Iitsu'. It was during the 1820s that Hokusai reached the peak of his career. His most famous work, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, including the famous Great Wave off Kanagawa, dated from this period. Later Hokusai added ten more prints to the series. A Tour of the Waterfalls of the Provinces and Unusual Views of Celebrated Bridges in the Provinces and began to produce a number of detailed images of flowers and birds. Hokusai, named 'GakyŌ RŌjin Manji' (The Old Man Mad About Art) produced One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji. On his deathbed he said, 'If only Heaven will give me just another ten years... Just another five more years, then I could become a real painter.' He died on May 10, 1849, and was buried at the SeikyŌ-ji in Tokyo.
