China, late 19th to early 20th century. Finely potted, the bell-shaped body with a square section gently flaring toward the base, with an upturned spout on one side and a straight-edged, shaped handle on the opposite, decorated with a high-relief archaistic inscription, and fitted with a square lid. The base with a six-character mark reading Yixing zisha gehu [Yixing Zisha teapots] and the interior of the lid with a small, impressed maker's seal.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Excellent condition.Weight: 456.2 gDimensions: Height 11.2 cm, Length 17.1 cmYixing clay teapots, also known as Zisha teapots, are crafted from a distinctive type of clay sourced in the Yixing region in Jiangsu Province in eastern China. This traditional form of tea ware developed in China during the fifteenth century and remains closely associated with the particular material qualities of Yixing clay.Archaeological evidence indicates that, as early as the Song dynasty, potters working in the Yixing area were already using locally sourced 'zisha', literally meaning 'purple clay', to produce ceramic vessels that may have functioned as early teapots. According to the Ming dynasty writer Zhou Gaoqi, during the reign of the Zhengde Emperor, from 1505 to 1521, a monk affiliated with Jinsha Temple, also known as the Golden Sand Temple, in Yixing produced a teapot of exceptional quality using local clay. By the sixteenth century, monks associated with Jinsha Temple were producing the first fully developed Yixing clay teapots. The wider adoption of these teapots was encouraged by Gong Chun, also known as Kung Chun, who served in a household associated with the Yixing tea connoisseur Wu Lun, born in 1440 and deceased in 1522. Highly valued among the scholarly elite, Yixing teapots soon achieved broad recognition, and their reputation extended far beyond their place of origin.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Yixing ware teapot, 15.2 cm high, in the Herbert F.
