拍品描述 翻译
A RARE DARK GREEN AND BROWN JADE 'TIGER' PENDANT, SPRING AND AUTUMN PERIODChina, 770-475 BC. Of flattened form, carved as a stylized crouching tiger, its body, finely incised with scrollwork and linear motifs evoking the fur of the animal, extending into a curled tail and a powerful head with a prominent muzzle, both pierced with small apertures for suspension. The smoothly polished, translucent stone of variegated dark green tones, accented with icy-white inclusions and a distinctive opaque dark brown area resulting from natural alteration.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and natural age-related imperfections. Light traces of weathering. Occasional minute chips along the edges, some of which have smoothened over time. Scattered small nicks and faint surface scratches. Weight: 32.6 gDimensions: Length 8.7 cmThe tiger, called 'hu' or 'laohu' in Chinese, is among the most recognizable charismatic megafauna worldwide. Originating in China and northern Central Asia, the tiger was known to the earliest Chinese, who likely feared, admired, and respected it for its strength, ferocity, and regal bearing. Although precise symbolism symbolism during the Shang period (c. 1600-1046 BC) remains unknown, the tiger certainly fulfilled a totemic, tutelary, and talismanic function. By the Western Han period (206 BC-9 AD), the tiger was regarded as the 'king of the hundred beasts' (baishou zhi wang), due to its power and ferocity, as well as distinctive forehead markings that commonly resemble the character 'wang', meaning 'king'. In addition, not only did the tiger figure among the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, but it gained a place among the auspicious animals that symbolize the four cardinal directions: the White Tiger, or 'baihu', of the west, the Azure Dragon of the east, the Vermilion Bird of the south, and the Black Tortoise of the north.Expert's note: The present pendant, carved in the form of a crouching tiger and decorated with various types of scrollwork, exemplifies a style characteristic of the late Spring and Autumn period and constitutes a fine example of jade craftsmanship of the time. Both powerful and refined, elegant yet restrained, the carving attests to the mastery of the artisan in the manipulation of the material, as well as to the advanced development of complex and dynamic ornamental designs.Literature comparison:Compare a related jade pendant in the form of a tiger, Spring and Autumn period, c. 600-476 BC, 3.8 cm long, in the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, accession number F1979.36. Several related jade 'tigers' pendants dating to the Autumn and Spring period have been published, including one in Yang Boda, Zhongguo yu qi quan ji (The Complete Compilation of Chinese Jades), vol. 1, 2005, p. 217, pl. 3, and a jade 'tiger' pendant, excavated from tomb no. 1 at Caomen Bay, Guojiamiao, Zaoyang, Hubei provice, now held by the Hubei Provincial Museum, and illustrated in Phoenix Reborn: Chu Jades Excavated from Hubei, 2017, pl. 7.Auction result comparison:Type: Related Auction: Christie's Hong Kong, 29 November 2024, lot 1045Price: HKD 403,200 or approx.
