拍品描述 翻译
China, c. 3300-2200 BC. Rectangular in form, with a slightly concave surface and a flat underside, one end with a circular aperture drilled from both sides, while the opposite end curving into a pronounced hook with a straight edge. The smoothly polished, opaque stone exhibiting a creamy-white tone due to extensive calcification, with scattered russet mottling and brownish inclusions revealed beneath the surface.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age, with surface wear and inherent natural imperfections, such as inclusions and small fissures. Expected traces of weathering and erosion. Minor nibbling and occasional minute chips along the edges. Few minuscule nicks and shallow surface scratches. The stone surface with extensive signs of natural alteration resulting from millennia of burial in contact with calcium-rich and carbonate-bearing waters.Weight: 90.1 gDimensions: Length 6.9 cmBelts were an important element of clothing and social identity in ancient China, with two main types commonly worn. Wide cloth belts were used to cinch the waist, while leather belts primarily functioned as fasteners. Leather belts were stiff and thick, making them unsuitable for tying like cloth belts, and they were usually secured with a hook-shaped buckle, known as a belt hook. Such belts were essential components of the formal attire of the nobility, and the origins of belt hooks date back to an early period. The appearance of jade belt hooks is often associated with the Liangzhu culture. Although relatively few jade belt hooks have been recovered from Liangzhu sites, their significance becomes evident when considering the size and structure of the tombs and the variety of other jade artifacts found with them. Jade belt hooks were rare burial items, and tombs containing them generally belonged to individuals of higher social status. This pattern is clearly demonstrated by the tombs at Fanshan and Yaoshan.Excavations of Liangzhu tombs have revealed short, wide, hook-shaped jade objects positioned near the lower torso of the deceased. These objects are often rectangular, with both ends rolled. One end usually has a round hole, while the other curves into a hook, as exemplified by the present piece. Some scholars interpret this form as the earliest stage in the development of the jade belt hook.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related jade belt hook, Neolithic period, Liangzhu culture, 5 cm long, excavated in 1987 from the Yaoshan Site, Liangzhu Town, Yuhang District, Hangzhou City, excavation site M7:53, in the Liangzhu Museum, Zhejiang, China, accession number 2013.12.10.
