AN UNUSUAL KINRANDE-STYLE 'DRAGON FISH' EWER, LATE MING DYNASTY

拍品描述 翻译
Expert's note: This striking 'dragon-fish' ewer is inspired by rare sancai-glazed examples produced during the Liao dynasty, notably those preserved in the Tongliao City Museum and related vessels sold at Christie's New York (19 March 2008, lot 525). The form closely follows these celebrated prototypes, with the mythical creature emerging from a base decorated with waves. Details such as the animated head, fins, wings, and scrolling handle reflect the sculptural vocabulary seen on Liao dynasty makara or dragon-fish ewers excavated in Inner Mongolia and Liaoning. While rooted in this earlier ceramic tradition, the present example diverges in its luxurious surface treatment. Instead of sancai lead glazes, it is finished in richly applied overglaze, characteristic of the kinrande style, much admired in Japan. The vibrant iron-red ground, turquoise-green accents highlight a vivid cross-medium exchange of artistic ideas. The ewer thus stands as a rare and imaginative revival of an ancient motif, re-envisioned through the lens of kinrande aesthetics.China, 16th century. In the form of a dragon-fish (makara), modeled in the round with a coiling body that rises vertically to form the vessel, the creature's head rests on the spout, while the opposite side forms the upward-curving handle. Finely modeled details include bulging eyes, a pronounced snout, layered fins, wings, and a scaly, textured body, all set upon a base painted with waves. The surface is richly glazed with a vibrant iron-red ground, enlivened by turquoise-blue, green, and cream tones.Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Good condition with old wear and firing flaws, including fritting to the foot, few dark spots, rubbing to glaze, remnants of gilt and pigments. Few minor touch-ups.Weight: 824 g Dimensions: Height 23 cm, Length 16.5 cmLiterature comparison: Compare a related sancai 'dragon-fish' ewer, likely serving as inspiration to the present lot, dated to the second half of the 11th century, 22.3 cm (high), in the Museum of Tongliao City. Compare a kinrande ewer with related color patterns, dated to the mid-16th century, 29.2 cm (high), in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2016.126a, b.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 19 March 2008, lot 525 Price: USD 25,000 or approx.
